In January 2024, the United Kingdom eased its travel recommendations to Ukraine for its citizens for the first time, allowing them to visit four regions if necessary: Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Ternopil regions. The list was expanded in early May.

Travel advice to Ukraine from the UK FCDO

According to the latest update, the FCDO recommends avoiding all but essential travel to the previously identified western regions, as well as Lviv, Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr regions. However, at the same time, the ministry prohibits travel within a 50-kilometer zone from the border of Volyn, Rivne, and Zhytomyr regions with Belarus and recommends avoiding travel to other regions of Ukraine.

Is it safe to travel to Ukraine now?

Despite the fact that the fighting is concentrated in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, there is still a risk of rocket attacks from the russian federation throughout the country. As for the northern regions of the country bordering Belarus, there is no direct threat of an offensive or the development of hostilities as of June 2024, but the constant presence of russian and belarusian military and belarusian security forces is recorded on the belarusian side of the border.

Rules of entry to Ukraine for Belarusian citizens and insurance

Currently, you can enter Ukraine only by land, as the airspace over the country remains closed. The most convenient option is to fly to one of the airports closest to Ukraine and then continue your journey by train or bus. The most convenient routes to get to Ukraine from the UK can be found here.

To enter Ukraine, British citizens need to have:

– a passport (valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry into Ukraine);

– proof of the purpose of the trip (travel voucher, event tickets, invitation, hotel reservation, etc;)

– proof of financial support ($45 per person for each day of stay in Ukraine);

insurance policy (please note: due to the martial law on the territory of Ukraine, foreign travel insurance may be canceled if a person violates the travel recommendations of the country of his/her citizenship, and therefore we recommend to obtain insurance through Ukrainian insurance agents; you can obtain insurance covering military risks on the Visit Ukraine portal at this link);

– visa (if you plan to stay in Ukraine for more than 90 days, or for the purpose of work or study; how to obtain a visa to Ukraine can be found here).

Mandatory security measures

To ensure a safe stay in Ukraine, foreign nationals must strictly adhere to the following rules:

1. Never ignore an air raid alert and, in the event of a threat, immediately go to the nearest shelter. In order to respond to threats in a timely manner, install the Air Alert mobile application (from the App Store or Google Play) and select the desired region to receive alerts directly to your phone in case of danger.

2. Observe curfews and always have your ID with you. You can find restrictions in different regions of the country here.

3. Do not take photos or videos of military personnel, military equipment, checkpoints, or other protective structures.

We remind you! Despite the war, foreigners continue to visit Ukraine, both for work and tourism purposes. Read how many foreigners entered the country in the first quarter of this year and from which countries they came most often in our previous article.

When planning a trip to Ukraine, first of all, you need to take care of the appropriate insurance policy, because any foreign insurance automatically terminates after crossing the Ukrainian border. In this case, we recommend that you take out insurance specifically covering military risks, which will cover not only standard medical care/treatment/diagnosis, etc. but also accidents and injuries caused by passive or direct military risks.

You can take out such insurance on the Visit Ukraine website. Follow the link and choose an insurance policy with the appropriate coverage and indemnity amount for the required period.

We recommend purchasing it for a safe and comfortable trip to Ukraine:
