In 2024, most European countries continue to accept refugees and provide them with comprehensive assistance. However, the number of applications for temporary asylum is gradually decreasing. Find out more about the countries most often chosen by international migrants in 2024
According to the EU Asylum Agency (EUAA), in 2024, Germany remains the clear leader in the number of applications for temporary protection. However, compared to the same period, i.e. the first half of 2023, this figure decreased by 20%.
One possible reason is the reduction in the flow of refugees from Ukraine, as most of those who wanted to leave had already left for safe places abroad during the first year of the full-scale invasion. Another reason is the introduction of stationary border control, as most applications come from refugees from Syria (29%), Afghanistan (18%), and Turkey (10%).
However, even though the rate of migration has decreased, Germany remains the number 1 destination country for asylum seekers in Europe.
In the previous article, we reported on which EU countries can re-apply for temporary protection status and what is required for this.
