RCA: compulsory car insurance in Italy
RCA (Responsabilità Civile Auto) is a compulsory car insurance in Italy that covers damages caused to third parties in the event of a road traffic accident caused by the car owner. This means that if you cause an accident, the insurance company will pay compensation to the injured party.
In addition to RCA, Italian drivers can optionally take out CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) insurance, which covers a wider range of risks, such as body damage, scratches, dents, etc., or comprehensive car insurance, which even covers theft of a car or its destruction as a result of a natural disaster.

Car insurance in Italy for Ukrainians: do I need to take out a local policy?
The Responsabilità Civile Auto is mandatory for Ukrainians who have re-registered their cars and obtained Italian licence plates or purchased a new car in Italy.
However, cars with Ukrainian licence plates are not required to take out the mandatory Italian motor third party liability insurance.
In turn, drivers of such cars are required to have a valid Green Card insurance policy.
The Green Card is an international insurance policy for motorists. If you have ever driven your own car out of Ukraine, you know that this policy is mandatory for crossing the border. However, it is also valid in Italy. The main thing is to keep track of the policy's validity and renew it in time.
If you have a valid Green Card insurance policy, you do not need to take out additional Italian insurance. Remember that the Green Card is valid not only in Italy and Ukraine, but also in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, so you will be under reliable insurance protection even when travelling to other countries.
How to buy a Green Card online?
You can buy a Green Card for a car with Ukrainian registration both abroad and in Ukraine. However, insurance abroad will cost much more.
Therefore, it is better to buy insurance online, as it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. The calculator allows you to calculate the exact price of the policy individually for your vehicle. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.
Just to remind you. There are several types of car parking areas in Italy, so drivers travelling on the country's roads should research this issue in advance. You can find out where to park your car in Italy to avoid fines here.
