Starting September 16, 2024, Germany will temporarily reintroduce border controls at all land borders. This decision was made to reduce illegal migration and prevent threats such as terrorism and cross-border crime. The borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, the Netherlands, France, and other countries are subject to checks. German Interior Minister Nancy Feser explained that the measure would last at least six months, but could be extended if necessary.

See our previous article for information on which German states will accept Ukrainians in September 2024.

Reasons for the introduction of control

According to the NOS, one of the main reasons for the tightening of control is the recent terrorist attacks in Germany, in particular the attack of a Syrian migrant in Solingen. At the same time, pressure on the government has increased both from citizens and the opposition. Radical right-wing parties, such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD), have been actively calling for tougher measures to reduce the flow of migrants. Previous elections have also shown that security and migration control are key issues for voters.

The introduction of border controls is in line with the requirements of the European Union, subject to prior notification of the European Commission. However, this raises questions about the duration of the measure, as some countries, such as Austria, have long maintained controls on their borders.

How will the introduction of border controls affect Ukrainians?

For Ukrainians traveling to Germany, the new rules may cause some difficulties. It is important to have all the necessary documents with you, including your passport and proof of temporary protection in Germany, if you have been granted it. For Ukrainians entering Germany through neighboring countries such as Poland or the Czech Republic, the new checks may increase the time required to cross the border. It is reported that special attention will be paid to those traveling without documents and asylum seekers registered in other countries. Such citizens may be returned at the border.

Increased control may also affect those traveling by car or public transport, as there are likely to be queues at the borders. German authorities recommend that citizens and migrants check the conditions of border crossing in advance and be prepared for delays.

Possible consequences and reactions of neighboring countries

Germany's decision also provoked reactions from neighboring countries. Austria, for example, expressed concern about the return of migrants to its borders and said it would not accept such persons. This could create conflicts between EU countries over responsibility for migrants already registered in other countries.

In addition, this decision may have implications for transit transport and the economy, as border controls may slow down freight transportation between countries.

What should Ukrainians planning a trip to Germany do?

Ukrainians planning a trip to Germany should pay attention to the new rules and make sure they have all the necessary documents to cross the border. It is important to be prepared for possible delays at the borders and to follow updates from the German authorities on the duration of these measures.

To avoid unpleasant situations while crossing the border, read our article on the current rules of entry and residence for Ukrainians in Germany, or contact our migration lawyers to get advice on moving, returning or first entry and obtaining temporary protection in Germany.

We remind you! Citizens of Ukraine in Germany must re-register their cars and obtain German license plates by September 30. This applies to all vehicles with Ukrainian license plates that entered Germany more than a year ago. Read more about the process of re-registration, as well as car registration in Germany, in our previous article.

asked questions

How can refugees enter Germany in 2024?

Ukrainians can enter Germany without a visa with a biometric passport. They can stay in the country without additional permits for 90 days, but during this period, refugees are required to apply for a residence permit (usually a residence permit according to § 24, paragraph 1, of the Residence Act) at the local foreigners' office. Since Ukrainians have no influence on how long it will take the authorities to process the application for a residence permit, it is sufficient to submit the application within the 90-day period, and this will guarantee legal residence in Germany until the application is processed.
