Contaminated water that entered the Desna River from the Russian Seim channel has reached Kyiv. We will tell you what you need to know about the situation, how dangerous this water is and whether residents of the Ukrainian capital should be concerned.

The situation with the pollution of the Seim River and then the Desna River has been developing for more than two weeks. At the very beginning of the story, frightening information appeared online, particularly for residents of the capital, who were urged to stock up on drinking water.

The water was indeed contaminated, but, as the relevant services stated, the contamination was not chemical but organic. Although the

Consequences of the pollution of the Desna River

The acting mayor of Chernihiv, Oleksandr Lomako, said that the water in the Desna near Chernihiv had darkened, fish were killed, and an unpleasant smell was felt in some places near the river.

At the same time, he noted that Chernihiv, like Sumy region, does not consume water from rivers, as it is taken from artesian wells.

Therefore, there is no threat to the lives and health of the citizens, said Lomako. However, the region has a ban on fishing and swimming in the Desna.

The situation in Kyiv is somewhat different, as the Ukrainian capital consumes filtered water from the Desna and Dnipro rivers.

Water situation in Kyiv

As of today, it is known that the contamination has reached the Kyiv region, namely the Brovary district. However, the main concentration of contamination is observed between the villages of Oster and Maksym in Chernihiv Oblast.

It should be noted that Kyiv residents receive water from three sources: 10% - from artesian wells, 30% - from the Dnipro, and over 60% - from the Desna.

At the same time, Kyivvodokanal claims that the situation is under control and that all drinking water indicators are normal.

Kyivvodokanal is fully supplied with reagents for water disinfection. All water treatment processes are carried out in accordance with the established procedure, and all water supply facilities are operating normally,’ Kyivvodokanal emphasises.

Recommendations for Kyiv residents

The Kyiv City Centre for Control and Prevention of Diseases of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine commented to Novyny.LIVE that Kyiv residents should not visit beaches in the city due to water pollution. Water bodies can be dangerous in terms of the possible acquisition of various diseases, including infectious diseases of the intestinal group, dermatitis, allergic diseases, etc.

‘Water bodies can be dangerous from the point of view of the possible acquisition of various diseases, including infectious diseases of the intestinal group, dermatitis, allergic diseases, etc. If such water gets into the human stomach, it can cause acute intestinal infections, which are especially dangerous for children,’ said Serhiy Chumak, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Kyiv.

At the same time, he stressed that the drinking water supplied by the centralised water supply system meets all the requirements.
