Insurance in Poland: who needs a policy and how do they differ?

Insurance is a mandatory document for entering Poland on most visas, especially for tourists and those planning short-term trips. It's important to choose the right insurance company and take out a policy that meets the requirements of the Polish authorities. What you need to know about it - read this article

Poland is considered one of the most popular countries in Eastern Europe. However, as a member of the European Union and part of the Schengen area, it has strict entry requirements, especially regarding health insurance. We will tell you what you need to know about it below.

Who needs insurance to enter Poland?

An insurance policy is required for certain categories of those entering Poland, especially if the trip is planned for a short-term or tourist period.

Types of insurance:

Tourists and persons visiting Poland on short-term visas (type C visa): In order to obtain a Schengen visa, which allows you to stay in Poland for up to 90 days, health insurance is mandatory. The policy must cover medical expenses of at least EUR 30,000, be valid in all Schengen countries and include emergency medical care and repatriation to the home country.

Long-term visas (type D visa): For people planning a long stay in Poland, for example, on a study or work visa, health insurance is also mandatory. The insurance must cover the entire duration of your stay and ensure access to medical care in Poland. In some cases, additional insurance coverage is required depending on the requirements of the consulate.

The insurance policy should contain a deductible of only 0 or 50, at the choice of the insured. What does the deductible mean: the amount of the initial payment by the insured in the event of each insured event. 0 means that the person pays nothing, while 50 means that the insured pays the first 50 euros. Insurance with a ‘zero deductible’ will be more expensive.

What kind of insurance do Ukrainians need?

For Ukrainian citizens enjoying temporary protection in Poland due to military operations in their homeland, health insurance is not required, as they have access to the Polish health insurance system (NFZ). However, when travelling outside of Poland to visit other EU countries, a policy may be required.

However, additional insurance will not be superfluous, as it has a more extensive list of insured events.

Insurance for students

If you decide to go to Poland to study, you will also need insurance. In this case, you have two options:

1. Insurance from an intermediary company

2. Insurance policy of the National Health Fund (NFZ).

The only difference is that NFZ insurance is valid only in Poland. If you want to travel outside this country, this insurance will not be available in the EU.

Green Card

If you decide to travel to Poland by your own car, you will, of course, need a Green Card. This policy is required to enter not only Poland but also all EU countries.

You can buy a Green Card from a trusted insurer here.

On the Visit Ukraine website, you can also take out any type of insurance that you may need to travel abroad: medical or travel insurance. Apply for policies on our portal in a matter of minutes.
