Who needs insurance to enter Poland?
An insurance policy is required for certain categories of people entering Poland, especially if the trip is planned for a short period of time.
Types of insurance:
- Tourists and persons visiting Poland on short-term visas (type C visa).
In order to obtain a Schengen visa, which allows you to stay in Poland for up to 90 days, health insurance is mandatory. The policy must cover medical expenses of at least EUR 30,000, be valid in all Schengen countries and include emergency medical care and repatriation to the home country.
- For students and employees residing in Poland on the basis of a long-term visa (type D).
For people planning a long-term stay in Poland, for example, on a study or work visa, health insurance is also mandatory. The insurance must cover the entire duration of your stay and ensure access to medical care in Poland. In some cases, additional insurance coverage is required depending on the requirements of the consulate.
The insurance policy should contain a deductible of only 0 or 50, at the choice of the insured.
What is a deductible? This is the amount of the initial payment by the insured in case of each insured event. 0 means that the person pays nothing, while 50 means that the insured pays the first 50 euros. Insurance with a ‘zero deductible’ will be more expensive.
Do Ukrainians travelling on a visa-free regime need insurance?
Yes, health insurance is mandatory for people travelling to Poland under the visa-free regime. According to Schengen requirements, travellers must have a health insurance policy that covers at least EUR 30,000 in case of medical care, emergency hospitalisation or repatriation due to illness or death.
Green Card for travelling to Poland by car
If you are planning a trip to Poland by your own car, one of the mandatory documents is an international insurance policy - the Green Card. This is a kind of analogue of the CTP (compulsory motor third party liability insurance), which is valid outside Ukraine and covers possible damages caused to third parties in the event of an accident.
The absence of a Green Card is a serious violation and may result in a refusal to enter the territory of Poland or even a fine. Polish border guards check the availability of this policy along with other documents, such as a driver's licence, technical passport and passport.
The Green Card policy guarantees financial protection in the event of an accident, as it covers damage to property or health of other persons. This is important not only for compliance with the law, but also for your own financial security. In the event of an accident without a valid policy, the driver will be fully liable for all damages caused, which can cost a significant amount.
You can apply for a Green Card for travelling abroad in your own car quickly and conveniently on the Visit Ukraine portal.
Do not postpone your preparations until the last moment - take out a policy in advance and travel to Poland confidently and safely!
General requirements for insurance policies for short and long term trips to Poland
Regardless of the purpose of your trip to Poland, having health insurance is a must for all foreigners. The requirements for insurance policies differ depending on the length of stay - whether it is a short-term visit under the visa-free regime or a long-term stay in connection with study, work or family reunification.
For short-term trips (up to 90 days), the insurance policy must meet the standards of the Schengen area. The main requirements are a minimum sum insured of EUR 30,000, coverage of all Schengen countries and coverage of emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation in case of illness or death. Such insurance is required to cross the border and can be checked by border guards.
For long-term trips (over 90 days), the insurance requirements depend on the type of stay. It is important that the policy covers medical treatment, preventive examinations, emergency medical care and possible hospitalisation.
What kind of insurance can I get for Poland?
When planning a trip to Poland or a long-term stay in the country, it is important to choose the right insurance that meets your needs. There are two main options: taking out a policy with Polish insurance companies or purchasing insurance through Ukrainian insurers.
Obtaining a local insurance policy in Poland is a convenient option for those planning a long-term stay, for example, for work or study. The most popular among foreigners is insurance through the NFZ (National Health Fund of Poland) or private insurance companies. However, this option has certain disadvantages. Firstly, such policies are valid only in Poland, which means that if you plan to travel to other Schengen countries, they will not provide adequate coverage. Secondly, the cost of private insurance in Poland is quite high, especially if the policy covers a wide range of medical services.
An alternative is to buy insurance through Ukrainian insurers on the Visit Ukraine portal. This is a quick and reliable way to get a suitable policy before travelling. On the portal, you can take out travel insurance that covers emergency medical care, hospitalisation and possible unforeseen expenses during a short-term stay. If you are travelling for a long time, you can take out a health insurance policy that meets the requirements of your stay in Poland.
The choice between Polish and Ukrainian insurance depends on your needs and the duration of your trip. However, taking out insurance in advance through Ukrainian insurers is often a more convenient, cost-effective and versatile solution, especially if you plan to travel not only to Poland but also to other European countries.
