Social benefits for Ukrainians: how much have European countries spent on supporting Ukrainian refugees?
Currently, there are more than 4 million Ukrainian refugees in Europe. In recent years, there has been a tendency to reduce social benefits for migrants as a result of the war. Moreover, the amount of a country's spending does not always depend on the number of migrants. Find out how much European countries spent on helping refugees from Ukraine
According to the Centre for Economic Strategy, at the end of January 2024, there were 4.9 million Ukrainian refugees abroad. In 2022, most European countries introduced various types and amounts of social assistance for Ukrainian refugees. However, there is currently a tendency to reduce payments, and some political leaders are proposing to abolish support for Ukrainians altogether. Which European countries have allocated the most funds to support Ukrainians?
Germany.
According to DW, citing the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper, about 1.18 million Ukrainians are currently registered in Germany. This is a new record. In 2024, the number of migrants increased by 45,000. During the period of hostilities in Ukraine, Germany spent €30.6 billion on refugee assistance.
Poland.
Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Zvarych reports that the number of Ukrainian migrants in Poland is 950,000. The state has spent €26.5 billion on refugee assistance.
Czech Republic
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, about 560 thousand Ukrainians lived in the Czech Republic this summer. During the full-scale invasion, the country spent 7 billion euros to help the affected citizens.

Spain.
This summer, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that the country had received more than 200,000 Ukrainians since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Like the Czech Republic, the country has spent 7 billion euros to support refugees.
France.
There are about 66.6 thousand Ukrainian refugees in France. Politico reports that migrants are reluctant to come to France. The state has spent €3.2 billion on supporting Ukrainians since the beginning of the war.
