The city authorities of the Belgian Ghent made an official statement regarding the start of construction of a village for Ukrainians who are in Belgium with refugee status. The project is planned to be implemented in the first quarter of 2023.

Since even before the reception of refugees in the city of Ghent there was not enough housing (for students and foreign workers), they decided to start with the educational sector. Namely, to establish a system of monitoring the number of students by obtaining data from universities.

In addition, the UN provides information that more than 52,000 Ukrainians arrived in Belgium on August 16. But only 332 refugees were registered in Ghent, who were given housing by local residents. Such data were provided by the city government.

Therefore, it was decided to build a separate village closer to the outskirts of the city in order to be able to conveniently accommodate many people. The construction process is planned to start already in September and to prepare at least 200 housing units to accommodate 600 people.

The Flemish government will take an active part in organizational, financial and construction issues so that the solution to the problem is effective and fast.
