Since the beginning of the full-scale war, almost 170,000 Ukrainians have applied for temporary residence in Italy. For most Ukrainians fleeing the war in this country, their residence permits expire on March 4, 2023. We tell you whether it will be possible to extend the validity of the document in Italy and how it can be done.

How can refugees from Ukraine extend their residence permit (Permesso di soggiorno) in Italy?

In order to extend the possibility of living in Italy legally, the country's authorities must issue a new decree. It will also contain the procedure for extending the permit.

Currently, according to the current resolution regulating the reception of refugees from Ukraine in Italy, the residence permit must be extended for 6 months and then again for 6 months. That is, for a maximum of 1 more year, taking into account the situation in Ukraine. Therefore, we should expect that residence permits for Ukrainians will be extended at least until March 2024.

Where in Italy has the procedure for extending the permit already started?

While waiting for the new resolution and taking into account the large number of documents to be processed, individual quaestors began to act independently.

For example, the term of residence permits issued by the Quaestura of Rome recently was not until March, but until August 2023. And according to unofficial data, the quaestary informs that the resettled people will have to personally apply for the extension of the document.

The Questura of the city of Florence has started a preliminary appointment for submitting documents for extension through their Telegram channel (go to the link or search by the number +39 334 75 49044, or @protezionetemporameaucraina_fi).

The message should include:

  ◦ Title: TEMPORARY PROTECTION UPDATE

  ◦ Enter name, surname, phone number

  ◦ Send a photo of your residence permit

Messages and data should be sent in Italian according to the sample below.

After sending, wait for the quaestary's response. You will receive a message with the specified date of reception.

You should present this notice at the check-in on the day of your reception at the quaestary.

Attention! This algorithm of actions is only for temporary migrants who belong to the competence of the quaesture of Florence.

Pay attention! There will be no automatic extension of the residence permit in Italy, so keep an eye out for new information on this issue in your region.

We would like to remind you that for the most comfortable life and to help those in need, there are certain benefits and assistance programs for citizens in Italy.
