Transliteration rules have been changed: find out when your passport will be invalid

Attention! On Tuesday, February 14, MP Roman Babiy posted on his Facebook page that Ukraine had changed its mind about revoking passports due to incorrect transliteration.

According to him, the process of revocation has been suspended, and the validity of those passports that have already been revoked in this regard has been restored (or will be restored in the near future).

It is noted that currently about 34 thousand Ukrainian citizens have passports with different transliteration.

In connection with the new law on the uniform model of transliteration of names in documents, all holders of foreign passports and ID cards need to check the correct spelling of the name in the documents as soon as possible.

The only example of transliteration of names in documents: what has changed

Starting from February 2023, new rules for writing names in documents, in particular in foreign passports and ID cards, came into force. This means that the name and surname of the holder of the document must be written in the same way both in the foreign passport and in the ID card. This especially applies to persons whose last name contains such letters as H, SH, SHCH, CH, KH, YU, YA, E.

What are the risks of spelling the name differently in documents?

If at least one letter of the name in the foreign passport does not match the spelling in the ID card, the document that was issued earlier will be canceled without your knowledge.

For example, if your name is Oleg on the ID card and Oleh is on the foreign passport, the validity of the document is not valid.

How to check the validity of documents?

You can check the validity of your documents on the official website of the State Migration Service of Ukraine.

If you find a discrepancy in the spelling of the name in your documents, you need to contact the Administrative Services Center, the migration service department or the "Passport service" as soon as possible. After applying, you can replace the document.

If the name is the same on both documents, your documents are valid and do not need to be replaced.

We remind you! Earlier, we talked about the new features of the "Diia" government app. From now on, Diia will have COVID certificates of Ukrainians vaccinated abroad. Read how to get the document here.
