Temporary protection in the Czech Republic guarantees Ukrainians basic social rights, including health insurance. The temporary protection visa issued last year is valid until March 31, 2023, so all refugees must renew it. Ukrainians have begun to wonder whether they need to apply separately to institutions to renew their health insurance. Read on to find out what steps to take.

The availability of health insurance depends on the validity of the temporary protection status. As soon as it is extended, the refugee will be insured and will receive a new insurance card.

We emphasize that the validity period of state insurance is equal to the period of temporary protection.

How do I get an insurance card?

5 working days after the temporary protection is extended, submit an application online on the website of the State Health Insurance Company. The OAMP (Department of Migration Policy and International Protection) will check the data, and then the applicant will be able to download the insurance card to a gadget or print it out.

A new card can be issued during a personal visit to a VZP branch. Bring your current insurance card and the document on the extension of temporary protection.

Be sure to inform the insurance company how the premiums will be paid for you. This must be done within 150 days of obtaining temporary protection in the Czech Republic. Failure to notify the insurer risks incurring a debt in the health insurance system, which will grow every day.

Benefits provided by temporary protection

Ukrainians who arrived in the Czech Republic after February 24, 2022, were granted temporary protection. This status allows Ukrainians to:

 Stay in the country for one year;

 use medical services;

 have access to the educational system;

 work legally.

We remind you! Temporary protection for some refugees will expire on March 31, 2023. To extend it, you need to reissue your documents. Read how to do this in our article.
