Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (KNU)

Founded in 1834, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Ukraine.

The original name of the university was the Kyiv Theological Institute, and later it acquired the status of a university and became known as Kyiv University.

Throughout its history, the university has repeatedly changed its name and status. In 1863, the university was closed by the authorities for the participation of students in the Polish War and resumed its activities only in 1865 under the name of St. Volodymyr's Kyiv Imperial University. In 1917, the university became the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in honor of the great Ukrainian poet.

KNU has been actively developing throughout its history and eventually became a leading center of education and research in Ukraine.

According to some reports, Lviv Academy with university rights was founded in 1661 by a decree of King Jan II Casimir, who granted the Jesuit College in Lviv "the dignity of an academy and the title of a university." In 1773 the Jesuit order was banned and the university was closed. It was reopened in 1784 and was called the University of St. Joseph. In 1805-1817 it was a lyceum, and in 1817 it was reopened as a university.

In the 70s of the nineteenth century, Ivan Franko, a world-famous Ukrainian thinker, writer, scientist, translator, psychologist, political and public figure, and one of the geniuses of Ukraine, studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of Lviv University.

On January 8, 1940, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR named Lviv State University after Ivan Franko. Today it is one of the main schools of French studies in Ukraine.

The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Ukraine, with a rich history that dates back to the seventeenth century.

The KMA was founded in 1632 in Kyiv, which at that time was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Royal Republic. The founder of the academy was Metropolitan Petro Mohyla of Kyiv-Halych, who sought to create an educational institution that would combine Orthodox theology and the humanities. Initially, the academy was called the Kyiv Brotherhood School.

At the end of the eighteenth century, the academy faced difficulties and was closed by the Russian authorities.

In 1992, after Ukraine gained its independence, the Academy was reorganized into the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and became a non-denominational university.

Today, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is one of the leading universities in Ukraine.
