Convenient and efficient baggage handling is one of the key components of the passenger experience.

We're telling you about the airlines that top the passenger dissatisfaction rating and tips to help you avoid baggage difficulties on future flights.

Which airlines receive the most complaints about baggage?

Leaders of the rating: Ryanair, British Airways, and EasyJet are among the airlines with the most complaints.

The full rating is as follows

Ryanair - 954

British Airways - 844

EasyJet - 565

Wizz Air - 552

Norwegian Airlines - 419

Flybe - 297

Turkish Airlines - 195

Virgin Atlantic - 182

Tap Portugal - 160

Iberia - 105

Ryanair, British Airways, and EasyJet were the focal points in this aspect, earning the highest number of complaints about lost, damaged, or delayed baggage.

Ryanair

New data shows that over the past five years, Ryanair passengers have lost more luggage than any other British airline.

According to Forbes Advisor, the low-cost airline received almost 1,000 baggage-related complaints between 2018 and 2022. The complaints concerned lost, damaged, or delayed baggage.

A spokesperson for the airline said: "Ryanair operates more than 3,200 daily flights to more than 230 destinations and is the industry leader with the lowest number of lost baggage incidents. All claims to the contrary are false, including this Forbes study."

British Airways

The UK's largest airline ranks second in the number of baggage complaints, having received 844 complaints over the past five years.

This figure does not take into account the total number of airline passengers, which means that the likelihood of losing or damaging a suitcase on Ryanair is no higher than, for example, on Iberia.

According to a recent survey, over the past five years, 28% of passengers in the UK have experienced problems due to airlines mishandling their luggage, and 2% of them have had their luggage lost and not found.

Passengers in Liverpool and Wales suffer the most from lost luggage, losing an average of £814.

A BA spokesperson added: "If luggage is delayed, our team will do everything possible to reunite the customer with their belongings and consider various transportation options to make this happen as quickly as possible."

EasyJet

EasyJet ranks third with 565 complaints.

A spokesperson for EasyJet claims that the company has the best track record in the industry:

"Between 2018 and 2022, EasyJet carried approximately 322 million customers with baggage. In the rare and unfortunate cases of baggage delays, EasyJet works with airport teams to return passengers' belongings as quickly as possible and encourages customers to submit online claims quickly and easily to ensure that lost baggage is returned and compensated."

What can help protect your luggage while traveling: useful tips

Firstly, it is worth taking out travel insurance. In general, 87% of respondents buy a policy when booking an airline ticket or even a few weeks before the trip. Make sure that the insurance you choose covers everything, including equipment (some policies do not cover it). You can take out insurance with 100% coverage in a matter of minutes here.

Put your luggage in the luggage room (only if necessary). This will reduce the likelihood of losing your belongings.

Make sure the tag on your suitcase is correct. If it is not, your suitcase may be sent to the wrong destination.

Check your airline's baggage policy. Some companies are generous enough to allow you to take a large carry-on bag.

Remove old tags from previous trips from your luggage. They can cause confusion for baggage handlers.

Take pictures of your luggage in case you need to file a claim if it goes missing.
