Despite Trump's obvious affection for putin, the former has a rival in his anti-Ukrainian views - Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who has become perhaps the biggest surprise of the US presidential campaign.

Thus, Ramaswamy, a potential US presidential candidate, has stated that he will recognize the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine as russian, block Ukraine's accession to NATO, lift all sanctions against russia, and personally visit moscow in 2025.

But why would the youngest contender for the Republican presidential nomination, who was considered more of a businessman than an experienced diplomat, make such loud statements? But what happens if an even more pro-putin president than Trump comes to power?

Who is Viveka Ramaswamy?

Viveka Ramaswamy was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Indian immigrants. He studied at Harvard and Yale Law School. He earned his first millions from investments while still studying. Today, according to Forbes, Ramaswamy's fortune is estimated at $630 million.

Until January 2023, he was the manager of Roviant Sciences, a company that dealt with drug patents, and in February 2023, after stepping down, he launched his presidential campaign.

Why does Viveka Ramaswamy not support Ukraine?

It is worth noting that before his scandalous pro-putin statements, Ramaswamy did not have a particular position on Ukraine. He made several ambiguous statements, but he did not express support for russia, but rather noted that the aggressor should be repelled and lose to Ukraine.

Rather, Ramaswamy positioned himself as a libertarian and later as an "anti-leftist" (anti-woke) candidate, picking up on a sentiment popular among Republicans. Experts note that such sentiments have played a special role during the Trump presidency, which justifies Ramaswamy's current position.

The young millionaire is not so much expressing pro-putin narratives as trying to become Trump's main competitor, who has a special affinity for putin. That is, realizing the precarious position of the former US president, Ramaswamy is trying to attract the support of those who would most likely vote for Trump, and thus, with such statements, he is trying to get the former head of state's political force.

This opinion of experts is confirmed by the fact that Ramaswamy is trying to appeal to basic Trumpian themes and narratives, in particular, about the destruction of American national identity and spending money on "nothing" because it does not go to America.

In addition, by choosing this position, Ramaswamy is trying to take away some of the electorate of Ron DeSantis, Trump's main rival among Republicans.

But at the same time, the young candidate's views on the situation in Ukraine are sometimes more radical than Trump's.

Could Ramaswamy become the president of the United States and would this be a challenge for Ukraine?

Currently, Vivek Ramaswamy's rating is hovering around 6%, but given that his advertising costs are ten times lower than his competitors and that almost no one knew about him before his loud statements, this is a good result (for him) and a "wake-up call" for Ukrainian society, including.

At the same time, Ramaswamy is not the only threat, as the narrative that America has already done more than enough is gaining popularity among Republicans, and doubts about the need for further support for Ukraine are growing.

All three main Republican candidates - Trump, DeSantis, and Ramaswamy - express anti-Ukrainian theses and advocate for the termination of financial and military assistance. However, it is still too early to talk about the future results of the US elections.

We remind you! U.S. officials are trying to convince Ukraine that the chosen strategy and tactics of the counteroffensive are wrong. Read more about the US position on this issue and what Ukraine insists on in our previous article.
