Giant Omelette Festival - Bessier, France

Cooking the "Friendship Omelet" is a long-standing tradition that dates back to the time of Napoleon Bonaparte. By the way, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the first official event.

According to legend, when Napoleon was traveling with his army in the south of France, they decided to spend the night near the city of Bessier. In the evening, Napoleon was treated to an omelet from a local chef and was so impressed with its taste that in the morning he ordered the townspeople to collect all the eggs and cook a huge omelet for his army.

Since then, cooking an omelet for the needy at Easter has become a tradition, and the omelet itself has become a symbol of brotherhood and friendship known as Confrerie.

So every year, chefs from many cities come to France to cook a huge omelet from several thousand eggs and receive a special title of chevalier. The event takes place on Concorde Street. The finished omelet is given away for free to all visitors.

Check out the upcoming dates of the festival on the official Giant Omelette website.
