In recent years, there has been a significant change in the perception of traveling alone. Faraway countries and exotic places are no longer just dreams, as traveling alone has become accessible and popular for a wide range of people. Today, not only students and adventurers, but also many other people choose this way of vacationing.

A notable confirmation of the popularity of independent travel is information from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). According to the latest data, international tourism is recovering and is approaching 84% of the pre-pandemic level.

We'll tell you about the six main trends in traveling alone and what the recovery of global tourism is all about in the article below.

Who chooses to travel alone?

It's easy to think that most unaccompanied travelers are young people and students. However, the reality is much broader.

A survey by Solo Adventures, an online platform for solo travelers, found that 40% of unaccompanied travelers are in the 30-45 age group.

This surprising trend can be explained by several factors:

First, this generation has a higher income than students and is more likely to have jobs that can be done remotely. This gives them more freedom and opportunities to travel.

Secondly, years of travel restrictions due to the pandemic have prompted many members of this generation to wait for the holiday season at home and take the chance to see the world only now.

The desire to travel and explore new places is not limited by age or status. On the contrary, it opens up great opportunities for anyone who dreams of adventure and discovery, regardless of their stage in life.

Most travelers are women

According to a survey by Solo Adventurers, women make up almost three-quarters of solo travelers. Women's interest in solo travel is growing every year, driven by online content on social media and various communities.

Independent travel is becoming not only a means of discovering new places and cultures, but also a way of personal growth. It helps to increase self-confidence and develop independence, allowing you to explore both the world and yourself at the same time.

Europe is the most popular destination

Europe remains the most popular destination for independent travelers. It offers an endless variety of cultures, languages, cuisines, and historical sites in a small area.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in lesser-known European destinations. Countries that used to be hidden treasures have become the object of increased interest of independent travelers.

Slovenia, Malta, Croatia, and Hungary have become real gems for those looking for new experiences and a unique European experience. The popularity of these lesser-known locations can be explained by their more affordable prices compared to larger tourist destinations.

Many of these countries also have a specific and unique character, which attracts travelers who are looking to discover something new and different from the usual routes.

The digital revolution

Technology has undoubtedly become an important catalyst for the growing popularity of independent travel. With the rise of social media sharing sites like Instagram, many solo travelers have found a virtual platform to showcase their adventures and inspire others.

Currently, about 9 million posts with the hashtag #solotravel have appeared on Instagram. The expression "if you can see it, you can do it" is especially relevant for solo travelers.

The virtual community of solo travelers is actually creating a snowball of enthusiasm that is gaining momentum and continuing to grow, encouraging more and more people to discover the world beyond the traditional tourist routes.

Safety first and foremost

Safety is the top priority for solo travelers today.

Smartphones, GPS services, and navigation apps that allow you to pinpoint your location at any time and even call for help if needed allow travelers to stay in touch with their loved ones and access the information they need quickly and conveniently.

Additionally, the ability to meet other travelers and collaborate with them over time often provides mutual reassurance and an extra layer of security.

Reduced costs

Affordability plays an important role and is a key factor when choosing a travel destination. Visiting countries during off-peak periods is becoming extremely popular among solo travelers.

Traveling off-peak has its advantages, including easier access to attractions and lower prices, as there are fewer tourists traveling at this time and there is almost no competition for accommodation and restaurants.

This makes traveling more comfortable and enjoyable, allowing travelers to spend more time and attention on comprehending and enjoying the cultural and historical values of the country they are visiting.

Global tourism is recovering, approaching pre-pandemic levels

According to the latest data released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourism is finally on the road to recovery after a long pause caused by the pandemic.

As of the end of July this year, the number of international tourist arrivals reached 84% of the pre-pandemic level. This data shows that different regions of the world are actively recovering their tourism sector.

In the period from January to July 2023, almost 700 million tourists made international travel, which is 43% more than in the same months of 2022.

Europe is showing excellent performance, reaching 91% of the pre-pandemic level, thanks to high demand and an increase in the number of American tourists. In turn, Africa, the Americas, and Asia Pacific reached 92%, 87%, and 61%, respectively.

Overall, UNWTO data confirm that tourism is recovering rapidly around the world, although economic challenges remain an integral part of this process. It is expected that by the end of 2023, international tourism will reach 80% to 95% of the pre-pandemic level.

We remind you! Some cities in Europe have started charging tourist tax from visitors, with the amounts ranging from 50 cents to tens of euros. Read more about the amounts involved and in which countries tourists now have to pay mandatory fees in our previous article.
