Best European countries for employment of Ukrainians: research data

Today, Europe openly accepts Ukrainian citizens, war refugees and labour migrants, granting them the right to healthcare, education, accommodation and work. The leaders in terms of the number of Ukrainians living in their territories are Germany (1.2 million), Poland (960 thousand) and the Czech Republic (360 thousand). But this does not mean that these countries have the best living and working conditions. So which countries are the best choices in 2024?

Every year, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network compiles the World Happiness Report, an international ranking of the world's happiest countries. It includes 150 countries. The following factors are taken into account when compiling the list:

- Social support

- GDP per capita

- Freedom of choice

- Healthy Life Expectancy

- The presence/absence of corruption;

- Generosity of the population.

Leadership in the global happiness rankings is facilitated by the public's connection with nature, environmental safety and a healthy work-life balance for the majority of the population.

The report is based on the average scores for each indicator over the past three years. This means that the report published in 2024 is based on the arithmetic mean of the scores for 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The article goes on to tell you which European countries are at the top of the list, with the best salaries, working conditions and the least competition for jobs.

Finland

This country has been at the top of the World Happiness Report rankings for 10 years. It is a country of high trust in the government and freedom.

Minimum wages here vary depending on the industry and the decision of individual trade unions. On average, you can earn at least 1800-2000 EUR per month. The working day is 8 hours, and overtime is paid at double time. Since 1987, Finland has had a law on gender equality, which guarantees the same level of remuneration and access to jobs for both women and men.

And although Finland is at the top of the ranking and offers good living and working conditions, the country is not popular among Ukrainian migrants. This means that it can be safely chosen as a place of refuge in 2024, as there will be the least competition for jobs here.

What do you need to get a job in Finland?

If you do not have Finnish citizenship, the first thing you need to do is to prove to the employer that you need the job. This depends on your citizenship and the country you come from. Some employers require a residence permit, some do not. In general, for those who work in Finland on a regular basis, it is recommended to check with the employer in advance whether a residence permit is required. This posting indicates the need for a job. Residence permits often limit the scope of a person's activities.

Ukrainians can apply for temporary protection as migrants as a result of a military conflict. This will also give them the opportunity to find employment. You can findout more about the peculiarities of applying for temporary protection in Finland and the opportunities it provides on the Visit Ukraine portal.

Denmark

The Danish word hygge describes a state in which we feel comfort, convenience, and kindness. According to the Danes, the key to happiness is regular meetings with people.

There is no minimum wage here, but you can expect to be paid from 2500 EUR per month. At the same time, on average, you can earn about 5200 EUR per month in Denmark. In addition to the right to work, refugees enjoy free education for children and healthcare.

What do you need to find a job in Denmark?

In order for a Ukrainian to get a job in Denmark, he or she needs to go through several basic steps:

1. Applying for a residence permit in accordance with the Special Act (biometric data must be submitted to the Citizen Service Centre of the Danish Immigration Service).

2. Obtaining a CPR number (analogue of the Ukrainian TIN), which is required for every procedure in Denmark (if you have a residence permit, it is registered by the municipality, if not - by the Danish Tax Agency upon special request).

3. Formation of NemID and MitID - a personal electronic key for digital identification (it is recommended to obtain both, as Denmark is currently transitioning from NemID to MitID).

4. Opening a bank account (for receiving a salary from the private sector) and a Nem account (for receiving a salary from the public sector).

The Netherlands

The country has a very developed social sphere: healthcare, family assistance, and financial support. This is one of the main factors that makes the Netherlands take the honourable 3rd place. It is also important that the country is friendly to foreigners, so you can safely go here if you have the intention to work in good faith.

The Netherlands is among the leaders in terms of published vacancies on the European job search portal europa.jobs, which can be easily checked by current publications. The minimum wage here is set depending on age and is calculated exclusively on an hourly basis to maintain fair pay, regardless of the hours worked per week. From 1 January 2024, it will be EUR 13.27 for people aged 21 and over.

In order for a Ukrainian to get a job in the Netherlands, he or she needs to obtain temporary protection status. If you are migrating for employment and not as a result of a military conflict, you need to obtain a combined residence and work permit (GVVA).
