Hurricane Milton has already been called the most powerful in the last 100 years, threatening the safety of residents of the US East Coast. Authorities are warning of strong winds, flooding and destruction. It is especially important for Ukrainians in the United States to take all precautions to protect themselves.

What is known about Hurricane Milton?

Hurricane Milton has already reached Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. This means that its wind speed exceeds 250 km/h, which can cause large-scale destruction of buildings and infrastructure and lead to massive power outages. The strongest impacts are expected in the state of Florida.

Residents are warned that the wind flow can easily destroy buildings, power lines and cars. In addition, flooding and prolonged power and water outages are expected.

Citizens living in the risk zone have already been urged to leave their homes. The New York Times, citing the Federal Emergency Management Agency, reports that more than 5.5 million people have been notified of forced or recommended evacuations. This is the largest evacuation in Florida's history.

Which cities will be affected by the storm?

Tampa, a densely populated city located in the bay of the same name on the Gulf of Mexico, is expected to be the first to be hit.

However, the hurricane will not stop in Tampa. It is likely to cross the territory of Florida to its opposite coast on the Atlantic Ocean.

Recommendations for Ukrainians in the United States

If you live in an area that may be affected by Hurricane Milton, it is important to prepare in advance. The US authorities are actively warning the public to take safety precautions and evacuate from dangerous areas. The following steps will help minimise risks and maintain safety:

- Follow updates from local emergency services and the US National Weather Service. They will provide up-to-date information on the status of the hurricane and the need to evacuate.

- Stock up on essentials, including water, food, medicine, flashlights, batteries and phone chargers. Have your identity documents and money ready.

- Find out about the nearest shelters or evacuation zones in your area. If the authorities call for evacuation, do not ignore their instructions. Ukrainian consulates can help with more information.

Those people who do not plan to leave their homes should reinforce windows and doors. Move valuables to upper floors to avoid flood damage.

Ukrainians are advised to inform Ukrainian consulates of their whereabouts and stay in touch in case of an emergency.

In addition, when faced with such a powerful natural disaster, it is important to think about insurance coverage. Medical insurance with accident coverage can be an important help. This insurance covers the costs of medical care in case of injury, as well as emergency services, including hospitalisation and emergency care.

Ukrainians living abroad can quickly apply for an insurance policy. You can order health insurance online on the Visit Ukraine website.

What recommendations do the US authorities give?

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor issued an important warning to residents who decided to stay in the evacuation zones.

‘I can say without any dramatisation: if you decide to stay in one of these evacuation zones, you will die,’ she said.

First of all, the local authorities are trying to achieve maximum evacuation of citizens. If they are unable to move to safe places, they should stay inside buildings, away from windows. Also, during a hurricane, you should never go outside.

We remind you! The Green Card lottery has been launched, which provides a unique opportunity for Ukrainians to obtain the right to live and work in the United States. You can find out how to apply and what the requirements are here.
