Unity Day is a young holiday in Ukraine, but it is very important. What is its main purpose and how to celebrate the Day of Unity in the context of a full-scale war is discussed further in the article.

When Unity Day was introduced: the history of the holiday

The Day of Unity of the Ukrainian People is a state initiative that was first held on February 16, 2022.

"In order to strengthen the consolidation of Ukrainian society, strengthen its resilience in the face of growing hybrid threats, information-propaganda, moral and psychological pressure on public consciousness," the Presidential Decree on the introduction of the celebration date reads.

The idea of the unity of the Ukrainian people emerged in early February 2022, in particular, when it was reported that russian troops might invade Ukraine on February 16. At that time, Ukrainians were urged to raise national flags on their homes.

Thus, the Unity Day has become a symbol of unity and solidarity of the Ukrainian people in the face of external challenges and threats.

How to celebrate the Day of Unity in times of war?

In 2022, the President called on society to unite and express opposition to russian propaganda to demonstrate that Ukrainians are a united people. Thus, on the eve of the full-scale invasion, events dedicated to the Day of Unity were held throughout Ukraine.

Traditionally, on the Day of Unity, the national flag of Ukraine is raised on buildings. And people are encouraged to wear embroidered shirts and hang blue and yellow ribbons on their arms, which have already become a kind of symbol of the great war.

In 2022, a huge 200-meter-long yellow and blue flag unfurled in Kyiv was indicative. A similar flag then appeared in Sievierodonetsk, a city now occupied by russia.

Today, it is equally important for Ukrainians to demonstrate the unity and solidarity with which they met on February 24, 2022. After all, unity is our strength and invincibility!
