The organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 have announced changes to the rules of the song contest. This is stated on the eurovision.tv website.

We'll tell you what updates will take place and how they will affect the participants and viewers in the article below.

What changes have been introduced in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024?

According to the updated rules, the first live performances of the Big Five and the country that won last year's Eurovision will take place in the semifinals of the contest, not in the final, as it was before.

This step will be an innovation for countries that have always had direct access to the final. Representatives of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden will perform their songs live for the first time during the semi-finals, thus expanding the opportunities for the contest visitors.

It is also worth noting that viewers will be able to watch the full performances of the Big Five countries and Sweden without having to wait for interval acts. Three additional performances in each of the semifinals will be presented in between the performances of other participants, which will make the broadcast more intense and interesting for viewers.

These changes also mean that the countries will perform in the semi-finals on the same night they were selected for voting in the draw that took place in January. Thus, the first semi-final, which will take place on May 7, will feature representatives of the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden, while France, Italy and Spain will take the stage on May 9.

The audience voting in the final will last longer

Another innovation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will be the extension of the time for the audience voting in the final. It will now start just before the first participant takes the stage, which will open up more opportunities for viewers to express their preferences.

This significant shift in the voting schedule will allow the audience to determine their favorite faster, without waiting for all the contestants to finish performing, as has been the case since the introduction of the audience vote in 1997. It also reflects a change in the way the competition is organized to make it more dynamic and exciting for the audience.

According to the Executive Producer of Eurovision 2024, Abby Adielsson, the changes have several key benefits:

For the Big Five countries and last year's Eurovision winner, the new rules provide a fairer playing field for the final, as they can now perform on the semi-finals stage for "real".

Viewers at the concert and in front of their TVs will be given the opportunity to see all the performances of this year's contestants live before the grand final.

The opening of voting before the first contestants' performances will allow the audience to express their preferences from the very beginning, an innovative step compared to previous years when voting started after all performances were completed.

This change will also allow viewers from non-Eurovision countries to have more time to vote and join in determining the results. It is important to note that these are likely not the final changes and the organizers promise to provide additional details in the future.

We remind you! Despite technical problems during the voting, Ukrainians have decided on the winner of the National Selection. Find out who won and will represent Ukraine in Europe at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
