US aid to Ukraine: Zelenskyy says Kyiv will lose the war without American weapons

The US Congress has been unable to pass a bill to fund aid to Ukraine for quite some time. Against this backdrop, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a high-profile statement, saying that Ukraine would lose the war without Washington's help.

"It is important to specifically address Congress: if Congress does not help Ukraine, Ukraine will lose the war," Zelensky said.

According to CNN, Zelenskyy's warning is one of the sharpest since the beginning of the war. It comes as Congress has been refusing to pass an aid package for Ukraine for months, leaving Kyiv to deal with labour and ammunition shortages while the russian army fires missiles at Ukrainian cities.

Ukraine needs US assistance more than ever

Franz-Stephan Gadi, a fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, says the war in Ukraine has entered a "transitional phase".

"russia is conducting reconnaissance attacks along the frontline. It is trying to advance where it can. And they are apparently preparing for a future offensive," he said.

While European countries have tried to replace US aid, Gadi said there is "no substitute" for the support Washington can provide.

"This year, Ukraine really needs US support. There are certain weapons systems, certain logistical support that European countries simply cannot provide to Ukraine," such as air defence systems, he said.

Why is Congress delaying assistance to Ukraine?

The US will hold presidential elections this year, with current President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump running for office. It is the latter who is actively promoting the idea of leaving Ukraine without aid in order to persuade Kyiv to negotiate.

By the way, The Washington Post found out what Trump's plan is to "end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours". It turns out that the former US president is ready to give russia the Ukrainian Crimea and the Donbas border areas occupied by russia. Although Trump himself denies this information, people in his inner circle say that this is the idea he is discussing in his inner circle.

Given that the US House of Representatives has a Republican majority, Trump, who is also a member of this party, can manipulate aid to Ukraine for the sake of his election campaign, saying that US taxpayers should not help the Ukrainian people, who are at war with russia and, among other things, are deterring enemy troops from attacking Europe, which is considered a strategic ally of America. It should not be forgotten that Ukraine's neighbours, where the russian army could go to war, are also NATO members.

Thus, the situation with aid to Ukraine remains confusing, but Democrats in Congress have promised that they can help keep House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) in office if he brings a bill to the floor for a vote.

It is worth noting that Johnson allegedly has another option to help Ukraine. It is a loan that Washington could offer to Kyiv. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he would agree to this step if there was no other way.

We remind you! The war in Ukraine has been going on for more than two years. Ukraine and its allies are seeking to put an end to russian aggression. To this end, the parties are organising a major peace summit in Switzerland this summer. How many countries will take part and what they want to decide at the first meeting, we tell you here.
