The German authorities have simplified the process of obtaining citizenship for foreigners, and as of next year, many Ukrainian refugees will be able to apply for a German passport. At the same time, the interest in obtaining German citizenship continues to grow, and last year more than 200,000 foreign nationals received passports. Find out how many Ukrainians were among them
Last year, 200 thousand people received German citizenship, the largest number since 2000. In particular, German passports were issued to citizens of 157 countries, schengen.news reports.
German citizenship: how many Ukrainians among foreigners have received passports
According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, in 2023, 200,095 people received German citizenship, which is 19% more than in 2022 (168,545 people).
Almost 6,000 Ukrainians also received German citizenship.
It is noted that most of the German passports last year were received by citizens of the following countries:
• Syria - 75,485 people;
• Turkey - 10,735 people;
• Iraq - 10,710 people;
• Romania - 7,575 people;
• Afghanistan - 6,520 people.

There are 5910 Ukrainians who received German citizenship in 2023. Of these, 7% had lived in the country for at least 10 years, and 5.3% for at least 6 years.
The number of Israelis applying for German citizenship is also increasing. While in 2023, 9129 applications for naturalization were filed by Israeli citizens, since the beginning of 2024, there have been 6869 applications.
It is known that Germany is planning to launch a new online platform that will provide information on the procedures for applying for citizenship. The website is to be launched on June 27, 2024, when the new German law on dual citizenship comes into force.
