The State Border Guard Service recorded more than 7.8 million border crossings by Ukrainians in the first four months of 2024. Find out how the trend of departures has changed compared to last year.

Decrease in the number of border crossings

The number of those who did not return

Almost 69 thousand citizens - 1.5% of the total number of those who left the country - have not returned to the country since the beginning of the year. In April, for the first time in a year, the number of people who returned home exceeded the number of those who left by 56 thousand.

At the same time, this year the number of those who did not return has slightly increased compared to last year, when 62 thousand Ukrainians did not return. However, for comparison, 14.1 million citizens left Ukraine in 2023, of whom only 142,000 remained abroad. This is 15 times less than in the first year of the full-scale war.

It is worth noting that the difference between the number of people who left and returned to Ukraine does not give an accurate understanding of the number of people who emigrated. Accurate data may vary due to temporary departures and returns.

The overall picture of Ukrainian migration in 2024 shows a decrease in the number of departures and an increase in returns. However, the problems of returning citizens from abroad in the future and the deficit that has already become noticeable now remain relevant, and comprehensive measures by the state are needed to address them.
