Whether you love nature, culture, gastronomy or adventure, Ukraine has it all and more. An endless space for discovery is at your service: from the mountain ranges of the Carpathians to the beaches of the Black Sea, from ancient castles to modern metropolises, from colorful countryside to scientific centers. We are telling you about Ukraine in its best tourist manifestations.

How big is Ukraine?

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe (not including Denmark and Greenland) by area, and its territory covers 603,548 km². To understand how big this is, let's look at a few examples.

Ukraine is bigger than France (551,695 km²), Germany (357,022 km²), Italy (301,340 km²), and the United Kingdom (243,610 km²). The area of Ukraine is almost equal to the territory of the largest American state, Texas (695,662 km²), and larger than the states of California or Florida. Or it can accommodate such European countries as Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland combined.

If we compare Ukraine with the largest Canadian province of Ontario (1,076,395 km²), Ukraine occupies a little more than half of its territory. Ukraine is also slightly smaller than British Columbia in Canada (944,735 km²) or slightly smaller than Alberta and Saskatchewan combined.

Ukraine also has a city called Rakhiv, where a memorial sign marks the geographical center of the continent. This means that a trip to Ukraine is actually a trip to the very center of European culture and nature.

Territorial changes due to Russian aggression

Unfortunately, since 2014, Ukraine has lost control over part of its territory. Russia has occupied the Crimean peninsula (about 27,000 km²) and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions (over 16,000 km²). In 2022, Russia's full-scale invasion led to the temporary occupation of even more significant territories, but thanks to the heroic resistance of Ukrainians, most of them were liberated.

As of today, the front line is located in the southeast of the country, far from popular tourist centers such as Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, or the Carpathians. For example, Lviv is located just 70 km from the border with Poland and is completely safe, while the distance to the front line is over 1,000 km.
