Car insurance in Portugal: do Ukrainians need to take out a local motor insurance policy?
Before travelling to Portugal, you should carefully read the local laws that regulate the rules of stay in the country for cars with foreign registration. It is important to understand that it is not always necessary for foreign drivers to take out a local CMTPL policy. There are other insurances that will help guests of this country
For Ukrainians planning a trip to Portugal by car, it is important to understand the rules of vehicle insurance. Let's find out whether it is necessary to take out a local motor third party liability (MTPL) policy, how international policies work, and what alternatives are available to protect your car and comply with local laws.
What does Portuguese law say?
Portugal is a member of the European Union and a participant in the Green Card international insurance system. This means that an international Green Card policy is recognised in the country. However, it is important that the policy is valid for the entire period of your stay in Portugal and covers the minimum insurance requirements set by local laws.
If you already have a valid international Green Card policy, you can use it in Portugal. This document covers the minimum liability obligations in the event of an accident.
If you do not have this document, we recommend that you take out a Green Card in advance, as the policy becomes effective only the day after it is issued.
When do I need to take out a local CTP insurance policy?
First of all, you need to take out a local motor third party liability policy if you plan to stay in Portugal for a long period of time (more than 6 months) and register your car in the country.
You may also need to take out a local motor third party liability insurance policy if your Green Card policy expires and you cannot extend it.
In addition, you will need a local motor third party liability insurance if you buy a car with local registration. In this case, a local policy is mandatory.
