Canada, which has long been considered one of the world's most immigrant-friendly centers, has unexpectedly launched an aggressive information campaign aimed at curbing the flow of new immigrants. According to Reuters, the advertising campaign cost the government $178,000 and aims to radically change public sentiment and immigration expectations.

What is the Canadian ad against potential immigrants about?

The advertising campaign was developed in eleven languages, including Ukrainian, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu and Tamil. Its main goal is to directly influence the search queries of potential immigrants. When people search for information about asylum in Canada, they will be shown specially prepared content called “The Asylum System in Canada.” It is noted that this ad is currently paid for until March 2025.

Key messages of the ad

One of the key messages of the campaign makes clear the complexity of the immigration process:

“It's not easy to get asylum in Canada. There are strict eligibility guidelines. Find out what you need to know before you make a life-changing decision,” reads one of the paid ads.

Why is Canada changing its refugee and migrant policy and what will change?

Polls show that a growing number of Canadians believe that the country accepts too many migrants. There is a tendency to blame immigrants for rising real estate prices and exacerbating socioeconomic problems. Therefore, the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is actually changing the decades-old policy of openness. The official course now includes:

● Reduction of immigration quotas;

● Accelerated processing of asylum applications;

● The possibility of deportation for temporary residents.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada also emphasizes the fight against misinformation and the risks of unauthorized mediation in immigration processes.

The government's action plan:

1. Force millions of people to leave the country on their own after their visas expire

2. Speed up the deportation procedure

3. Minimize new immigration flows

Canada is demonstrating an unprecedented change in migration policy. The country that used to be a symbol of tolerance and openness is now building stricter barriers for potential immigrants.
