Work in Bulgaria for Ukrainians 2024: vacancies, salary, conditions
More than 55 thousand Ukrainians currently live in Bulgaria, including labour migrants and war refugees. Almost all of them are employed in the country in various ways - by obtaining a visa or temporary protection. Bulgaria has been attracting labour migrants from Ukraine for years. Today, thousands of refugees are also heading there in search of protection from the war. Most of them plan to stay in the country for a long time, so they immediately start looking for a job. How to get a job in Bulgaria?
If you have temporary protection status:
According to the Bulgarian legislation, persons granted temporary protection have the right to work and vocational training.
If you have a work visa:
Citizens of the EU and EEA countries do not need any permits to work in Bulgaria. People from the rest of the world need to obtain a work visa and a residence permit before moving to Bulgaria.
What types of work visas are available in Bulgaria?
- A visa for short-term work (up to 3 months).
- Type D visa for long-term employment.
What documents are required for employment in Bulgaria?
1. A completed application form according to the sample
2. A copy of a valid passport with a photo and personal data;
3. A certificate of no criminal record issued by the state of which you are a citizen or the state of your usual residence - at the first application;
4. Proof of housing (e.g. a notarised lease agreement);
5. Justification from your employer;
6. Documents on education, speciality, legal capacity, professional qualifications and work experience, legalised and accompanied by a translation into Bulgarian certified by a notary or the Department of Consular Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
7. A certificate-declaration from the employer for foreigners employed under an employment contract;
8. A reference declaration from the employer on the average number of employees under an employment contract for the previous 12 months;
9. A declaration from the employer that the working and remuneration conditions are met and that they are not more unfavourable than those for Bulgarian citizens;
10. A copy of the concluded and signed fixed-term employment contract, certified by the employer and valid from the date of issuance of the residence permit, and a copy of the job description;
11. A document confirming the fulfilment of the conditions for performing a profession included in the List of Regulated Professions in Bulgaria.
12. Compulsory health insurance, which is valid for Bulgaria for the entire period of residence, unless you do not pay for health insurance in the country.

Please note! The basis for obtaining a visa is an invitation from the employer. This is a certification from the Bulgarian side of the intention to provide employment for a foreigner, or a work permit by the relevant government at the place of registration of the employer.

Where do Ukrainians work in Bulgaria now?
The largest number of vacancies and, accordingly, the highest level of demand for qualified specialists are in the following areas:
- information technology (IT);
- construction
- manufacturing and engineering;
- services.
In most cases, applicants are required to have knowledge of the Bulgarian language, a European-style CV and a high level of adaptability to be in demand in the local labour market.

What are the salaries of Ukrainians in Bulgaria?
The minimum wage in Bulgaria is set at BGN 560 per month, which corresponds to approximately €260. The approximate working day is 8 hours. The minimum wage per hour in the country is BGN 3.37, which means that you can earn at least BGN 6,720 per year.
Just a reminder. The humanitarian aid programme for Ukrainian refugees in Bulgaria will remain unchangeduntil 31 December 2024. This was reported by The Sofia Globe.
