Bulgaria extends program to help refugees from Ukraine: new deadline
The government has extended the humanitarian assistance program for refugees from Ukraine in Bulgaria. Find out more about the new terms and the assistance that Ukrainians can receive in the country
Bulgaria has extended the humanitarian aid program for Ukrainian refugees, which was first introduced by the government of Kiril Petkov in 2022. At a meeting on July 31, the interim government approved a decision to extend the program until December 31, 2024, without changes. This was reported by The Sofia Globe.

What assistance is available to Ukrainian refugees in Bulgaria in 2024?
In accordance with the European Commission directive, the humanitarian assistance program for refugees from Ukraine in Bulgaria provides for state payments for living expenses.
In addition, as in other European countries, temporary protection in Bulgaria gives Ukrainians the right to:
– legal stay in the country;
– access to the labor market and education systems
– social assistance
– free medical care;
– reunification with family members or other close relatives
– free public transportation for children (7 to 14 years old).
To register and obtain temporary protection, you should contact the nearest Regional Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (RDMIA) or one of the Registration and Reception Centers (RRC).

How many Ukrainian refugees are there in Bulgaria?
Since russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a total of almost 2.5 million Ukrainians have entered Bulgaria. Of these, more than 180 thousand people have been registered under the EU temporary protection scheme, of whom about 55 thousand remain in the country. It is also noted that about 6 thousand people are currently using the state program.
