Australia to open embassy in Ukraine for the first time in almost three years: details
The Australian Embassy in Ukraine has been operating since 2015. Two days before the full-scale invasion, the country closed it. However, the diplomatic mission will soon reopen as usual
Australia has announced the reopening of its embassy in Ukraine. We tell you when they plan to launch the diplomatic mission.
When will the Australian Embassy in Kyiv be opened?
As Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said at a briefing in Kyiv, where she visited Ukraine for the first time in 10 years, the situation in Kyiv makes it possible to reopen the Australian embassy. She said that the institution would fully resume its work in the coming months.
‘We have always said that we will do this when it is safe. We have been working on security measures to make this possible, and I am very pleased to be here to announce the opening of the Australian Embassy from next month. The embassy will be based in Kyiv. And in the coming months, our embassy will be fully operational,’ she said.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry welcomed the decision of the Australian side. He thanked his colleague, calling it ‘a manifestation of true solidarity with Ukraine’.
The Australian Embassy in Ukraine has been operating since 2015. In early February 2022, concerned about the situation, Australia moved its embassy to Lviv. However, 2 days before the full-scale invasion, the country closed the embassy there, transferring its staff to Poland and Romania.
