After years of fierce fighting in Ukraine, the situation on the front line and in the political arena has changed significantly. By 2026, hopes for a swift resolution to the conflict have given way to the realisation that the conflict has entered a new, complex phase. We examine whether we should expect the war in Ukraine to end this year.

Putin on the end of the war

The media is actively circulating a fresh statement from the Kremlin. Russian dictator Putin stated outright: ‘I think that the “Ukrainian conflict” is drawing to a close.’

However, we should not jump to conclusions, as such information manipulation is a typical tactic of the Russian authorities. Most likely, this is an attempt to divert attention or pull the wool over people’s eyes ahead of the Russians’ next offensive on the front line, as previously reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and to demonstrate to the West (particularly the US) a supposed willingness to engage in dialogue. In reality, however, Moscow is giving no indication of withdrawing troops or relinquishing the occupied territories. This is a typical game of attrition: the Russian Federation is simply trying to consolidate the current front line and freeze the conflict on its own terms.

Budanov on a swift end to the war

Peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow are moving towards an agreement, and resolving the war in Ukraine may not take long. This was stated by the head of the President’s Office, Kirill Budanov, in an April interview with Bloomberg.

According to him, progress is being made in the negotiation process with Russia. Budanov is also convinced that it will not drag on.

“They all understand that the war must end. That is why they are negotiating. I don’t think it will take long,” he noted.

Peace talks 2026

Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has been trying for over a year to implement his plan for a “swift” end to the war. Initially, there was much talk of a forced ceasefire, but the reality proved more complex.

The US is indeed pressing for the need for negotiations and is linking military aid more strictly to diplomatic steps. But both Kyiv and Moscow are sticking to their red lines. Ukraine insists on a just peace and firm security guarantees, realising that a mere pause would give the enemy time to rearm. Europe is not standing idly by either: EU countries have significantly ramped up arms production and set up their own support funds to safeguard Ukraine against potential disruptions to American supplies.

After several months of intensive negotiations, the US claims that talks have reached an impasse. Moreover, Washington may withdraw from the negotiation process if no progress is made.

Why the front has stalled: the war of drones and electronic warfare

The current reality on the front line is a far cry from the scenarios of the first years of the invasion. The front has practically frozen not because of a reluctance to fight, but because of a technological impasse.

The skies are now completely dominated by FPV drones with machine vision, capable of independently locating and engaging targets in any conditions. Large-scale tank breakthroughs have become physically impossible. Now it is a war of attrition between electronic warfare (EW) systems. The winner will be whoever can jam the enemy’s signals faster and protect their own positions. It is this battle of technologies that determines the rate of advance, which is now measured literally in metres.

Expert forecasts: when will the war end

Renowned political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko, in a comment for TSN.ua, responded to the question of what is needed for a swift or unexpected end to Russia’s war against Ukraine as follows: “The answer is unconventional: a miracle is needed. What could be that miracle? I think most Ukrainians have an answer to this question. Life is life; Putin’s death could happen. We’ve been hoping for this since 2022. In 2022 and 2023, there was hope that this would lead to the end of the war, but now such expectations are fewer. Even if it happens, it won’t automatically end the war straight away. From an optimal point of view, there won’t be a sudden end to the war. We’ll have to negotiate.”

The military themselves view any talk of a quick peace with immense scepticism. For the lads on the front line, statements from Moscow are just white noise. They are preparing for a protracted stalemate and are urging society not to relax, but to adapt to the current realities.

A reminder! For decades, the Soviet authorities and the Russians turned the tragedy of the Second World War into an aggressive cult.
