The Ukrainian media is spreading information about new EU family reunification programmes that will allegedly allow Ukrainian men to travel abroad legally. These rumours come as millions of Ukrainian families have been living in different countries for almost three years due to the full-scale invasion. Read more about the real possibilities of reuniting Ukrainian families in the EU and the prospects for new programmes
Due to russia's full-scale invasion, millions of Ukrainian families have found themselves on opposite sides of the border. Many women and children have fled to the European Union in search of safe haven, while men have remained in Ukraine. Recently, social media and some media outlets have been reporting on allegedly new EU programmes that will allow Ukrainian families to reunite. The article below explains whether European countries are really preparing such initiatives and how the family reunification mechanism works.
What is family reunification and how does it work?
Family reunification is a legal mechanism that allows family members to legally move to the country where their relative lives. In EU countries, this procedure is regulated by both European legislation and national laws of each state.
Currently, spouses, minor children and parents of minors can be reunited. In some cases, adult children or elderly parents in need of care also have the right to reunification.
Is the EU planning new programmes for Ukrainians?
Despite rumours circulating in the media, there are currently no official statements from the European Union or individual member states regarding the development of special reunification programmes for Ukrainian families.
Furthermore, the current political situation in the EU indicates a tightening of migration rules. In many European countries, there is growing support for right-wing political forces that advocate for restrictions on migration and a review of existing refugee support programmes.

Are such programmes possible in the future?
Experts assess the prospects of special reunification programmes for Ukrainians as unlikely.
Firstly, because of the general trend towards toughening migration policy in the EU. Secondly, the current rules for family reunification do not provide for mechanisms to circumvent the ban on the departure of certain categories of citizens established in Ukraine.
It is worth noting that European countries are gradually reducing support programmes for Ukrainian refugees, focusing on helping those who have already integrated into local communities.
What to do if you are planning a family reunion?
If you are considering family reunification with your family in the EU, you should seek advice from migration lawyers. Specialists will help you assess your chances, explain the current requirements of a particular country and help you prepare the necessary documents. It is important to remember that the reunification procedure can be lengthy and requires careful preparation, including proof of financial ability to support family members and availability of suitable housing conditions.
Request a consultation with a migration lawyer to find out about the possibilities of moving to a particular country!
Just to remind you! Many Ukrainians who officially reside in the European Union would like to come to Ukraine to visit relatives or for other personal purposes. Whether Ukrainians with temporary protection can travel from the EU to Ukraine - read here.
