The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has released statistics on popular study formats among Ukrainian students abroad. Contrary to expectations, the lightweight program with a Ukrainian studies component, which was supposed to reduce the workload on children, did not gain much popularity. Find out what forms of education Ukrainian students choose abroad
The vast majority of Ukrainian students currently studying abroad do not choose the proposed facilitated form of study with a Ukrainian studies component. This is evidenced by the statistics of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine on the education of students abroad as of January 2025.

Ukrainian students abroad: why is the simplified program not in demand?
The Ukrainian studies component is a shortened educational program for students outside of Ukraine. It involves the study of subjects that are not taught abroad: Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature, history of Ukraine, geography, defense of Ukraine, and the basics of law.
The purpose of this program is to reduce the academic load on students who attend schools in the host country and study remotely in Ukrainian educational institutions.
However, according to the Ministry of Education and Science, in January 2025, only 7,005 students chose to study in a simplified form, focusing only on the Ukrainian studies component. At the same time, most parents prefer full-fledged education for their children according to the Ukrainian program.

How many Ukrainian schoolchildren are currently abroad?
In total, almost 356,000 Ukrainian students are currently studying abroad. Distance learning remains the most popular form of education in Ukrainian schools, with over 184,000 students choosing it. Another 108,000 children study in the family form, and almost 56,000 students study in the external form.
When introducing the Ukrainian studies component, the Ministry of Education and Science expected that such a program would help avoid a double study load and at the same time preserve educational ties with the home country. The ministry held a series of consultations with parents, students, and educators to analyze the main challenges of implementing this form of education.
Based on the results of the research, measures were developed to overcome the identified problems. In particular, teachers were trained in the methodology of teaching the Ukrainian studies component, and organized materials were created for further use in the educational process.
The MES continues to work on improving programs to ensure quality education for Ukrainian children abroad.
One of the main challenges for Ukrainian families abroad is adapting their child to the new education system without losing contact with the Ukrainian program. It is important to understand how to combine studying at a local school and distance learning in Ukraine, what rights your child has, and how to legalize documents. A consultation with an educational lawyer will help you find the best solution for you.
We remind you! Starting in 2027, Ukrainian schoolchildren will be studying under a new reform that includes a number of innovations. We told you what changes the government is preparing for school education.
