The new Czech government plans to maintain the previous cabinet's policy on special long-term residence for Ukrainian refugees. This is a mechanism that allows economically active and self-sufficient Ukrainians to obtain stable residence status in the country. This was reported by the Czech publication novinky.cz.

The program has been in place before and, according to the publication, is planned to be continued under similar conditions.

What does special long-term residence status in the Czech Republic entail?

Long-term residence is intended for Ukrainians who meet the established requirements and can prove their financial solvency. If the applicant receives a permit, they are guaranteed:

● another five years of legal residence in the Czech Republic;

● the possibility of applying for permanent residence in the future.

Thus, the program creates a more stable future for those who have already integrated into Czech society and are working officially.

Will the application rules change?

The government will consider amendments to the current rules to open new registration for temporary protection holders. It is expected that:

● the requirements for applicants will remain unchanged;

● only the deadlines for submitting applications will change.

Registration will follow the same procedure as before.

For many Ukrainians who are already in the Czech Republic on the basis of temporary protection, this means a chance to move to a more stable legal status without changing conditions.

What requirements must be met

To obtain a long-term residence permit, the applicant must meet strict criteria. The main requirements are:

● to confirm an annual income of approximately 440,000 Czech korunas gross;

● for each additional member of the household, the threshold increases by approximately 110,000 korunas;

● not to receive humanitarian aid intended for refugees;

● not to have any medical insurance debts;

● ensure that children attend compulsory school.

In fact, the program is aimed at those who work officially, pay taxes, and do not use social support.

How many Ukrainians are in the Czech Republic

According to official data, there are almost 400,000 Ukrainian citizens in the Czech Republic. Most of them enjoy temporary EU protection. At the same time, about 16,000 people received special long-term residence permits last year.

The continuation of the program means that the Czech Republic does not plan to curtail the legalization mechanism for economically active Ukrainians. For those who work, have no debts, and meet the income criteria, this is an opportunity to settle in the country for a longer period.

Since migration procedures require careful documentation and proof of income, Ukrainians should assess their eligibility in advance. If necessary, you can seek advice from migration lawyers at Visit Ukraine, who can help you understand the conditions for long-term residence in EU countries and prepare a package of documents in accordance with local legislation.

We remind you! The Czech Republic is preparing to revise its social support rules for Ukrainian refugees, and the changes may come into force as early as 2026. The authorities are discussing new approaches to payments, verification of actual place of residence, and support conditions for different categories of people. Read about who may be subject to restrictions, what payments are currently in effect, and what to prepare for in the future.
