Fuel economy is one of the main reasons why Ukrainian drivers choose cars with gas cylinder equipment (LPG). The question often arises: if a car has just been imported from abroad, is it necessary to first register it for petrol and then separately re-register it for gas?

Installing LPG equipment on an imported car

LPG equipment can be installed even before the first state registration in Ukraine. This applies to both brand new cars and old cars imported from abroad.

This approach allows you to save a lot of time and money by completing all the paperwork in one visit.

The main advantage of installing gas before registration is saving on bureaucracy. If you install gas right away, you will receive a registration certificate (technical passport) with a note about the type of fuel (for example, S — petrol/gas).

You will not have to pay twice for blank forms and visit the service centre twice: first to register the car, and then to re-register it after installing the equipment.

How to register LPG equipment on an imported car

The procedure for imported cars is slightly more complicated than for already registered cars, as it requires compliance with customs and certification formalities.

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Customs clearance. First of all, the car must pass through customs clearance.

2. Installation permit. You must obtain permission to install LPG equipment. It is issued by the Main Service Centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the State Automobile Transport Research Institute.

3. Equipment installation. Contact a certified service station (SS) to install the system.

4. Certification. After installation, the converted car must undergo certification. At this stage, the STO is obliged to issue you with an Acceptance and Transfer Act and a Certificate of Design Approval.

5. Expert examination. Have your vehicle inspected by the Expert Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

6. Registration. Contact the service centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for initial state registration. The administrator will enter the LPG data based on the certificate of conformity, and you will immediately receive the number plates and technical passport with gas entered.

If you are installing gas on an already registered car

If you decide to convert your car after you have already received Ukrainian number plates, remember: installing LPG is considered a conversion of the vehicle.

After installation, you have 10 days (from the date of receipt of the certificate of conformity) to contact any convenient MIA service centre for re-registration.

The presence of the car itself at the service centre during re-registration is not required (if all documents and expert examination/certification are available).

Package of documents

To register (or re-register) a car with a gas installation, you will need:

▪️ Ukrainian passport (or ID card with proof of residence).

▪️ TIN (taxpayer identification number).

▪️ Customs documents (for cars that have just been imported from abroad).

▪️ Vehicle registration certificate (if the car is already registered).

▪️ Certificate of conformity or technical inspection report.

▪️ Vehicle acceptance and transfer report (issued by the service station after installation).

▪️ Certificate of design approval.

▪️ For legal entities: order appointing a responsible person.

For Ukrainians planning to buy a car, it is important to consider insurance rules. After purchasing a car, whether new or used, it is important for owners not to forget about civil liability insurance. Civil liability insurance is a mandatory requirement for the legal operation of a vehicle on Ukrainian roads, and it is convenient to do this online, in particular through the Visit Ukraine service, without unnecessary visits to insurance company offices.

Reminder! The Ukrainian car market has surprised us again: among the leaders are not only practical station wagons, but also old premium German cars, as well as Ferraris and Lamborghinis among the deals. January statistics show the real preferences of drivers — from their first budget car to the car of their dreams. Find out which brands and models were purchased most often.
