A large-scale security crisis has unfolded in Mexico. The chaos was caused by the elimination of one of the world's most wanted criminals.

El Mencho's elimination

On Sunday, 22 February, the Mexican government officially announced the death of Nemesio Osejera Cervantes, better known by his nickname ‘El Mencho’. The leader of the New Generation Jalisco Cartel (CJNG) was killed during a special operation by the national armed forces.

Ocejera had been at the head of one of the country's largest criminal organisations for years. According to The New York Times, the operation took place in the city of Tapalpa (Jalisco state) with the support of intelligence from the United States.

Unrest has already spread to 19 states

The leader's death provoked an immediate reaction from the militants. While the unrest was initially reported in five regions, the latest data shows that the number of states affected by the violence has risen to 19.

Current situation:

❗️ Roadblocks: there are reports of roadblocks and fierce clashes in the state of Querétaro.

❗️ Heavy armoured vehicles of the National Guard and the army are being brought into the city. A full-scale deployment of armed forces has begun to restore order.

❗️ Air traffic: Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airports have temporarily suspended flights. Passengers are forced to seek shelter in terminal buildings.

❗️ State of emergency: Public transport has been suspended in Jalisco, and residents are prohibited from leaving buildings.

Of particular concern is the fact that the violence has affected Guadalajara, a city preparing to host World Cup matches.
