8 March in Ukraine: will it be a public holiday in 2026?

In 2026, International Women's Day falls on a Sunday. We examine how this will affect Ukrainians' work schedules and whether it is worth planning a long weekend at the beginning of spring.

The question of whether 8 March will be a day off traditionally concerns many, as this holiday is strongly associated with an extra day of rest. However, in the current situation, the answer directly depends on the labour laws in force during the period of martial law.

How will we be resting on 8 March 2026?

For most Ukrainians who work a standard schedule (five days a week with weekends on Saturday and Sunday), 8 March will already be a non-working day. The holiday date simply coincides with the usual calendar weekend. There is no separate ‘holiday’ day off in the usual sense.

Will it be moved to Monday?

In peacetime, Ukraine had a convenient rule: if a public holiday falls on a day off, it is moved to the nearest working day. That is why, in the past, Ukrainians used to have Monday off after a public holiday on Sunday.

However, during martial law, the rule on transferring holidays does not apply. The usual rules on mandatory public holidays and non-working days are temporarily suspended.

What this means in practice:

▪️ Monday, 9 March 2026, will not automatically become a day off.

▪️ For most employees, it will be a normal working day.

▪️ No additional days off are planned at the national level.

Has the 8 March holiday been cancelled?

Despite periodic discussions in parliament about the appropriateness of this holiday, no final decisions have been made about its cancellation at this time. Formally, 8 March remains on the list of holidays and non-working days defined by the Labour Code. However, the status of the holiday in 2026 does not provide any practical advantages due to its coincidence with Sunday and the cancellation of the transfer mechanism.

Who can still be given a day off on 9 March?

The law allows employers to independently determine the working hours of their employees. Some companies (especially in the office sector) may, on their own initiative, make 9 March a day off or a shortened working day to support their staff.

Such changes to the schedule are formalised by internal company orders and are not mandatory for everyone. Most companies will leave their work schedule unchanged.

The absence of an additional day off on Monday is not a reason to give up pleasant emotions and attention to loved ones. If you are looking for a way to make this spring day special, a stylish and useful gift — patriotic merchandise from Visit Ukraine — will be a great solution.

The brand's official store offers high-quality clothing (hoodies, sweatshirts, T-shirts), cosy accessories and unique souvenirs with Ukrainian symbols. Reminder! Ukrainian Women's Day is increasingly associated with the birthday of Lesya Ukrainka, a symbol of intellect, strength of spirit, and national dignity. It is not just a new date on the calendar, but a rethinking of the role of women in the history and present day of Ukraine.
