The myth of universal European prosperity is shattered by statistics: the financial gap between the West and East of the continent is enormous. Find out which countries topped the wealth rankings and which ended up on the list of economic outsiders
Europe is a continent of striking financial contrasts. Despite the region's general perception as economically prosperous, the actual distribution of capital reveals a deep divide. Residents of Western and Northern Europe enjoy significantly higher levels of prosperity, while Eastern Europe still lags significantly behind.
Based on data from the UBS Wealth Report 2025, Euronews analysis and the latest 2026 salary figures, we have mapped out the financial stratification of the European region.
What is wealth in statistical terms?
Net capital (or wealth) is the total value of a household's assets (including financial assets and real estate) minus all debts.
Top richest countries: where millionaires live
Financial centres traditionally top the rankings. Looking at Europe as a whole, the absolute record holder is Switzerland, where the impressive sum of €634,584 falls on each adult.
Within the European Union, Luxembourg is the undisputed leader (€523,591). These are the only two countries on the continent where the average wealth exceeds half a million euros. Denmark confidently takes third place with a capital of €444,898.
The ‘€300,000+’ club (average wealth per adult):
▪️ Netherlands: €342,477
▪️ Norway: €340,364
▪️ Belgium: €322,805
▪️ United Kingdom: €313,840
▪️ Sweden: €308,935

The largest economies: who is richer?
When comparing the five largest economies in Europe, the United Kingdom ranks first, while Italy ranks last with the lowest level of wealth among the giants. The average wealth per adult in these countries is distributed as follows:
▪️ United Kingdom: €313,840
▪️ France: €278,550
▪️ Germany: €237,172
▪️ Spain: €215,945
▪️ Italy: €198,321
The other side of the coin: who is at the bottom of the list
More than a third of European countries have an average wealth per adult of less than €100,000. These are mainly Eastern European countries.
Romania is considered the outsider within the EU, with an average capital of only €44,568 per person. Looking at the entire European continent, Turkey has the lowest figures (€29,923).
Countries with capital below €100,000 (in descending order):
Latvia (€91,783) ➔ Czech Republic (€86,791) ➔
Croatia (€76,358) ➔ Estonia (€72,276) ➔ Lithuania (€63,189) ➔ Slovakia (€58,573) ➔ Poland (€56,159) ➔ Hungary ➔ Romania ➔ Turkey.
The scale of inequality: West vs East
The figures clearly demonstrate the geographical divide. Northern European countries also show excellent results, although the distribution there is uneven (for example, Finland is closer to the middle of the table).
The gap in Europe: The average capital of a Swiss resident is more than 20 times higher than that of a Turkish resident.
The gap in the EU: The wealth of a Luxembourg resident is more than 10 times higher than that of a Romanian resident.
Salary realities in 2026
Wealth is accumulated capital, but the economic picture is incomplete without an assessment of current income. According to the head of the financial committee, Danylo Getmantsev, the median minimum wage in Europe in January 2026 also shows serious disparities.
▪️ Average minimum wage in the EU: €1,345.9 (approximately £67,295).
▪️ Median including EU candidate countries: €1,147.3 (£57,365).
Contrasts in minimum incomes (January 2026):
1. Ireland (€2,391 or UAH 119,600) and Germany (€2,343 or UAH 117,200) were predictably among the leaders.
2. The lowest figures were recorded in candidate countries: Albania (€517 or UAH 25,850), Moldova (€319 or UAH 15,950) and Ukraine (€173 or UAH 8,650).
Europe remains a region with a high standard of living, but there is still a long way to go to achieve economic parity between its eastern and western borders.
Most of these destinations can be conveniently combined into car routes, especially if you are planning a trip through Central or Western Europe. Before departure, it is important to check the rules for toll roads in the countries of transit and destination. If you plan to travel on such highways, it is worth purchasing an electronic road vignette in advance. At Visit Ukraine, you can quickly purchase vignettes for various European countries online — without queues and fines at the border. This allows you to avoid unpleasant surprises and focus on your route.
