Many Ukrainians who have moved to European Union countries continue to use cars with Ukrainian registration. At some point, it may become necessary to sell such a car — for example, due to a change of residence, financial reasons, or the desire to purchase another vehicle.

However, selling a car with Ukrainian license plates abroad has a number of legal nuances. In some cases, the procedure can be quite simple, and sometimes it requires additional documents and actions.

We will tell you what sales options exist and what is important to consider in order to avoid problems in the future.

The easiest option is to sell the car to another Ukrainian

Most often, Ukrainians sell cars with Ukrainian registration to other Ukrainian citizens who are also in Europe. In this case, the procedure can be quite simple. The parties conclude a purchase and sale agreement, which is sometimes even drawn up in any written form — by hand. After concluding the agreement, the seller transfers to the buyer:

● the car's technical passport;

● the car keys;

● the signed purchase agreement.

However, it is important to remember one key detail: until the new owner re-registers the car in Ukraine, the vehicle remains legally registered to the previous owner. This means that in the event of traffic violations or other problems, the seller may still be formally liable. That is why lawyers advise to keep a copy of the purchase agreement.

Can a car with Ukrainian license plates be sold to a local EU resident?

Theoretically, a car with Ukrainian registration can be sold to a citizen of a European Union country. However, in practice, such transactions are rare. The reason is that the buyer will have to go through several additional procedures:

● customs clearance of the car;

● technical certification of the vehicle;

● registration of the car in their country.

In many cases, these procedures can be complicated or expensive. Because of this, foreign buyers usually prefer cars that are already registered in the EU.

Official sale of a car in Europe

In order to sell a car as safely and legally as possible, it is often recommended to officially register it for export from Ukraine. In this case, you need to deregister the car in Ukraine for export and draw up transit documents. This procedure can be performed in person in Ukraine or through a trusted person with the appropriate power of attorney. This option allows you to avoid legal risks and make the sale of the car completely legal.

Why is it important to conclude a written contract?

Regardless of who the car is being sold to — a Ukrainian or an EU citizen — it is imperative to sign a written purchase and sale agreement. This document helps to:

● confirm the fact of the transfer of the car;

● record the date of sale;

● protect the seller from possible fines or legal claims.

If the new owner violates traffic rules or gets into legal trouble, the contract will serve as proof that the car no longer belongs to the previous owner.

Before selling a car in Europe, it is important to assess all the legal and practical aspects of the transaction. This is especially true in cases where the car remains registered in Ukraine.

If you plan to continue traveling around Europe by car, you should also take care of insurance for trips abroad.

For Ukrainian drivers, an international insurance certificate, the “Green Card,” is a mandatory document that confirms the existence of car insurance outside Ukraine. You can apply for such insurance online through the Visit Ukraine service, which allows you to quickly obtain the document and use your car in European countries without any problems.

We remind you! In 2025, more than 14,800 insurance claims were settled abroad under the Green Card. Read about which countries Ukrainian drivers were most often involved in accidents and why the amounts of compensation differ.
