Budget travel across Europe has become more affordable. The Deutschland-Ticket now covers routes to Austria, Poland, the Netherlands, and other countries. Learn more about how to take advantage of this opportunity
The Deutschland-Ticket has opened up new opportunities for budget travel across Europe. Although the ticket is officially valid within Germany, there are actual routes where you can cross the border without paying extra—and this is especially important to know before you travel.
How does the Deutschland-Ticket work?
The pass allows for unlimited use of:
regional trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn)
public transit (buses, trams, subways)
Important: The ticket is not valid on high-speed trains (ICE, IC, and EC).

Can you travel abroad with the Deutschland-Ticket?
In most cases—no. But there are exceptions: if a regional route from Germany continues across the border within the fare zone, the ticket may remain valid.
Where you can actually travel:
Salzburg (Austria)
From Munich, you can travel to Salzburg by regional train (e.g., RE) without any additional charges.
Kufstein (Austria)
Another popular destination from Bavaria that is part of the cross-border transport zone.
Basel (Switzerland)
Some regional routes allow you to travel to border stations, including Basel.
Enschede, Arnhem, Venlo (Netherlands)
Local trains regularly cross the border, and the ticket is valid on these sections.
Wissembourg, Lauterbourg (France)
Small French towns easily accessible by regional trains from Germany.
Świnoujście (Poland)
Routes along the Baltic coast allow you to reach the Polish resort without an additional ticket.
In border regions, some lines also enter Danish territory—but only within the scope of local routes.
What should you keep in mind?
The ticket is valid only on regional transport.
Not all international routes are included in the coverage area.
Rules may vary by region.
If the train changes class (e.g., to IC/EC), a separate ticket is required.
Please note! Be sure to check your route in the DB Navigator planner or on the Deutsche Bahn website before your trip. Use the “Nah- und Regionalverkehr” filter to see only those trains where the Deutschland-Ticket is valid.
If you are planning a trip in the near future, it is worth thinking about your route in advance and checking the available travel options. It is convenient to do this through the ticket booking system for all types of transport on Visit Ukraine — the service allows you to quickly find and book tickets for planes, trains, or buses in one place, which is especially useful in the context of changes in international air traffic.
Reminder! The conflict surrounding Iran is already affecting the global air travel market and forcing carriers to raise fares. Find out why tickets are becoming more expensive, which routes have been hit hardest, and how the conflict is impacting global tourism.
