Clean air, green parks and a comfortable urban environment are becoming key factors when choosing where to live and travel. In 2026, experts identified cities where the environment truly enhances quality of life: from Europe to Australia. Which cities have managed to minimise smog, reduce pollution levels and create a healthy environment for their residents? Find out which cities made it into the ranking of the world’s cleanest and what sets them apart
With rising levels of air pollution and an increase in allergic conditions, environmental considerations are becoming a key factor when choosing where to live and travel. In 2026, analysts from international environmental organisations and urban planners compiled an updated ranking of the world’s cleanest cities — those where it is easier to breathe, more comfortable to live and safer for one’s health.
Several factors were taken into account when compiling the list: air pollution levels (PM2.5), the amount of green space, access to public transport, noise levels, water supply, and the environmental policies of the city authorities.
Leaders of the environmental ranking
Oslo (Norway) confidently takes first place. For several years running, the city has remained a benchmark for an eco-friendly approach: car use is being actively reduced here, electric transport is being developed, and the majority of residents live within walking distance of parks and forests. Oslo is also investing in sustainable energy and ‘smart’ urban infrastructure.
In second place is Vilnius (Lithuania). The Lithuanian capital demonstrates an impressive balance between urbanisation and nature: over a third of its territory is covered by green spaces, and air pollution levels remain among the lowest in Europe.
Third place goes to Helsinki (Finland) — a city with a well-thought-out environmental strategy, the cleanest air and a well-developed public transport system. Measures to reduce the carbon footprint and improve the energy efficiency of buildings are being actively implemented here.
Also in the top rankings are:
▪️ Vienna (Austria) — one of Europe’s most liveable cities with a well-developed public transport system and numerous parks
▪️ Stockholm (Sweden) — a leader in sustainable development and environmental innovation
▪️ Munich (Germany) — combines industrial potential with high environmental standards
▪️ Singapore — an example of a ‘city in a garden’, where nature is integrated into the urban landscape
▪️ Canberra (Australia) — a capital city with low pollution levels and a high quality of life
▪️ Sydney (Australia) — a major metropolis with a focus on preserving the natural environment
▪️ Reading (UK) — one of Britain’s ‘greenest’ cities with an active environmental policy
why it matters
Clean air has a direct impact on health: it reduces the risk of allergies, asthma and cardiovascular diseases. In green cities, stress levels are also lower thanks to access to nature, peace and quiet, and a high-quality urban environment.
Furthermore, such cities are becoming increasingly attractive for living, investment and tourism. They are actively implementing ‘green’ technologies, developing cycling infrastructure and public transport, and creating comfortable conditions for residents and visitors.
