Easter in Europe isn’t just about festive services, fairs, and family gatherings. In many countries, this period is accompanied by actual restrictions: from bans on entertainment to the complete closure of stores and altered public transportation schedules. Some of these rules are long-standing traditions, while others are current regulations, and violating them can result in a fine.

Therefore, Ukrainians traveling or living in Europe should familiarize themselves with the specifics of the celebrations in advance to avoid unpleasant situations.

Poland: Closed Stores and Fines for “Easter Pranks”

In Poland, Easter is a public holiday, so most stores are closed on Sunday and Monday. All activities are prohibited except for critical infrastructure—hospitals, police, and transportation.

Public transportation operates on a weekend schedule.

It’s also worth noting the popular tradition of splashing water: if it gets out of hand, it can be classified as disorderly conduct, carrying a fine of up to 500 zlotys (about 110 euros).

Czech Republic: Restrictions on Large Stores

In the Czech Republic, Easter (Velikonoce) combines religious and folk traditions. At the same time, there are clear rules for businesses. On Easter Sunday, stores larger than 200 m² are prohibited from operating. Supermarkets, shopping centers, as well as most government offices and banks are closed. Only pharmacies, train stations, and gas station stores remain open. Violations can cost owners up to 1 million crowns (approximately 40,000 euros).

At the same time, there is no complete ban on concerts or parties on Good Friday, and religious services are held in a subdued format.

Germany: “Quiet Days” and a Ban on Entertainment

In Germany, Good Friday (Karfreitag) is a day of mourning. In many federal states, the so-called Tanzverbot—a ban on public entertainment—is in effect. The ban applies to:

● discos and parties;

● concerts and shows;

● in some regions—even sporting events and movie theaters.

Fines can range from 500 to 2,000 euros. Loud music is also prohibited.

Public transportation operates on a holiday schedule, and supermarkets and shopping centers are closed on Friday and Sunday.

Hungary: Strict retail regulations

In Hungary, large stores are closed on Easter Sunday and Monday. The exception is small shops where the owner serves customers personally. Violating the rules can result in a fine of up to 1 million forints (about 2,500 euros).

Public transportation runs on the Sunday schedule, but in Budapest, additional trips may be added on popular routes.

Switzerland and Norway: strict silence and restrictions on entertainment

In Switzerland, Good Friday is an official day of mourning.

Concerts, parties, and sporting events are prohibited, and violations may result in fines of up to 10,000 francs.

In Norway, there is a tradition of “media silence”: television and radio avoid entertainment content, and establishments operate without music. Stores are closed on holidays, and public transportation runs less frequently.

Italy and Spain: Traditions Instead of Strict Bans

In Italy, there are fewer legal restrictions, but strong religious traditions prevail: on Good Friday, people abstain from meat and loud celebrations. Stores are mostly closed on Sundays.

In Spain, local restrictions apply during Semana Santa: a ban on loud music, possible restrictions on alcohol sales, and road closures due to religious processions. The fine for obstructing a procession can reach 3,000 euros.

How to prepare for a trip through Europe during Easter?

To avoid difficulties, follow these basic recommendations:

● Check holiday dates in your destination country;

● Shop in advance, as stores may be closed;

● Check public transportation schedules—service runs less frequently;

● Avoid loud entertainment on “quiet days”;

● Carry cash.

The tradition of dousing with water: where could this result in a fine?

In Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia, the tradition of dousing with water on Easter Monday is still observed. It symbolizes purification and spring renewal. However, it’s important to remember: you cannot douse strangers without their consent.

Possible fines: Poland — up to 500 zlotys, Czech Republic — up to 1,000 crowns, Slovakia — up to 33 euros, Hungary — usually no fines, but it is frowned upon in public places.
