With the arrival of spring warmth, the first primroses began to bloom in the forests of Lviv Oblast. Among them, you can already see snowdrops, snowdrops, lungwort, coltsfoot, anemone and other early spring plants. At the same time, ecologists remind us that these flowers can only be photographed and examined, as their damage or destruction is a violation of environmental legislation.

In our previous article, we talked about the best flower locations in Ukraine: where to go to see crocuses, sakura, tulips, and daffodils.

What is the penalty for picking primroses in Ukraine?

The Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Lviv Region reminds us that the destruction or damage to primroses is a violation of environmental legislation. Such actions are prohibited by the Laws of Ukraine “On the Red Book of Ukraine” and “On Flora”, and administrative liability is provided for their violation.

In particular, the following fines apply in Ukraine:

1. From UAH 510 to UAH 1700 for the illegal acquisition, sale or distribution of flora;

2. From UAH 1700 to UAH 3655 with confiscation of plants - if the violation concerns species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine or occurs on the territory of a nature reserve fund;

3. Compensation for environmental damage for each plant plucked - depending on the species, it ranges from UAH 37 to 62.

For example, compensation for illegally plucked plants can be as follows:

- UAH 62 for wild garlic;

- UAH 49-62 for saffron (crocuses) and snowdrops;

- 37-62 UAH - for dormouse grass.

Environmentalists also remind that the ban also applies to the sale of Red Data Book plants, even if they were grown at home.

Why are primroses important for the natural ecosystem?

Environmentalists emphasize that primroses are important for natural ecosystems. These plants not only symbolize the arrival of spring, but also play a key role in restoring the natural balance after winter.

Primroses become one of the first sources of nectar and pollen for bees, bumblebees and other pollinators that wake up after a cold period. Thanks to this, insects receive the necessary food, and many plants can be pollinated and regenerate normally.

At the same time, due to the massive collection of flowers for bouquets and illegal trade, natural populations of primroses are gradually declining. Many of them grow and regenerate very slowly, so picking flowers along with bulbs can lead to the gradual disappearance of certain species in nature.

What spring flowers bloom first in Ukraine?

The first spring flowers can be seen not only in the Lviv region. In different regions of Ukraine, primroses begin to appear in early March, as soon as the weather gets warmer.

For example, in Zakarpattia, crocuses (Heifel's saffron) are among the first to bloom. In early March 2026, they appeared in the Berezynka arboretum, where you can traditionally see large fields of these bright purple flowers. Later, crocuses began to bloom in the village of Kolochava, which is also known for its spring natural locations.

In addition, the famous “crazy sakura” has already begun to bloom in the city of Mukachevo. The tree got this name because it blooms much earlier than other sakuras - sometimes several weeks before the massive flowering in the city.

The appearance of primroses in different regions of the country attracts the attention of tourists and photographers every year. However, ecologists remind us that it is better to admire these plants in their natural environment, without damaging them or picking flowers.
