The Zakarpattia region welcomes spring earlier than the rest of Ukraine. This year, the magnolia blooming season began as early as March—warm days hastened the appearance of the first buds. Uzhhorod and Mukachevo have once again become the top destinations for those who want to see magnolias in bloom.

Where exactly the trees are blooming, which variety bloomed first, and what else is blooming in Transcarpathia this spring—we’ll cover all that below.

The 2026 Magnolia Season in Transcarpathia: Why Did It Start Early?

Usually, the mass blooming of magnolias in the Transcarpathian region occurs in late March to early April. However, this year the first buds appeared as early as mid-March. Experts attribute this to the abnormally warm weather that has settled in the region. Already this weekend, photos of blooming trees began circulating on social media.

Early blooming is typical for trees planted in sunny locations—in open areas, along wide streets, and on southern slopes. It is precisely these magnolias that are the first to respond to the warming and produce buds even before the start of the calendar spring season.

The best routes for the 2026 Easter holidays in the Carpathians — are compiled here.

Where do magnolias bloom in Uzhhorod?

Uzhhorod is traditionally considered one of the best cities in Ukraine for observing magnolia blooms. The first buds, both fully and partially open, are already visible on the central streets of the regional capital, in city parks, and in the yards of local residents.

One of the most notable locations is the area near the building of the Transcarpathian Regional Military Administration, where many magnolia trees grow. This part of the city gets plenty of sun, so blooming begins here among the first. It is Uzhhorod’s magnolias that attract tourists from all over the country every year, who come for spring photos and walks.

By the way, we recently reported that the first spring flowers have also bloomed in Lviv Oblast. Details — follow the link.

Cobus magnolia blooming in Mukachevo

Mukachevo has also marked the start of the blooming season. As early as March 20, the Mukachevo City Council announced that the Kobus magnolia had bloomed on Cyril and Methodius Square. This species is among the most frost-resistant of the deciduous trees in the magnolia family and tolerates the climatic conditions of Transcarpathia well.

The Kobus magnolia is distinguished by its hardiness and ability to adapt to various soils. Its buds are among the first to appear, which is why this species often becomes the “first harbinger” of the magnolia season in the region. Cyril and Methodius Square is a convenient location in the center of Mukachevo, easily accessible on foot.

Cherry blossoms and crocuses in Transcarpathia: what else blooms in spring?

Magnolias are far from the only spring attraction in Transcarpathia. As early as March 12, the so-called “early-blooming cherry blossoms” bloomed in Mukachevo, traditionally blooming before the main season. It is this variety that kicks off the cherry blossom season in the city. In total, nearly 8,000 cherry trees have been planted in Mukachevo, and the longest cherry blossom alley on Uzhhorodska Street stretches for about 1.4 kilometers.

In addition, crocuses—Heuffel’s saffron—bloomed in early March at the “Berezinka” Arboretum near Mukachevo. This plant is an early spring bloomer, and its appearance signals the awakening of nature in the region. The combination of blooming crocuses, cherry blossoms, and magnolias makes March and April the best time to travel to Transcarpathia.
