April 1 has long been a day when seriousness takes a back seat, and jokes, on the contrary, become the primary form of communication. Around the world, people play pranks on friends, colleagues, and even entire audiences through the media and social networks. Some April Fools’ Day pranks are so convincing that they fool millions of people and eventually become part of history.

Despite the popularity of this day, the exact origin of April Fools’ Day remains a subject of debate. There are several versions explaining how the tradition of pranking on April 1st began—and each has its own interesting details.

In our previous article, we described how Ukraine is turning its resources into an instrument of revival and international recognition.

Where April Fools’ Day Came From: The History of the Holiday

The history of April Fools’ Day has no single confirmed origin, and researchers propose several versions of its emergence. The most common of these is linked to 16th-century France, when in 1582 the country switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. After that, New Year’s Day began to be celebrated on January 1 instead of the end of March, though some people continued to celebrate according to the old dates. It was these people who became the butt of jokes and were nicknamed “April fools.”

Another version dates back to ancient times. In Ancient Rome, Hilaria—a day of merriment—was celebrated at the end of March, during which people dressed up, joked around, and made fun of one another. Similar traditions can be found in other cultures, particularly in India during the Holi festival, which is also accompanied by jokes, informal behavior, and an atmosphere of general merriment.

Some researchers also link the holiday’s origins to natural cycles. Early April marks the change of seasons, when the weather is often unpredictable, which was symbolically perceived as a kind of “joke of nature.” It was this very unpredictability that may have been another factor that cemented the tradition of playing pranks on this day.

In our previous article, we discussed Easter celebrations in Ukraine in 2026.

How is April Fools’ Day celebrated in different countries?

Although April 1 is celebrated in many countries, the traditions of pranks vary significantly—and some of them are quite unexpected.

In France, this day is known as poisson d’avril—“April fish.” One of the most popular traditions involves secretly pinning a paper fish to someone’s back. If the prank succeeds, the “victim” is laughed at and called an “April fish.” This tradition is so popular that even bakeries sell chocolate fish specifically for April 1.

In the UK, there’s an unusual rule: you can only play pranks until noon. It’s believed that anyone who tries to prank someone after 12:00 becomes a “fool” themselves. Even some media outlets follow this tradition, limiting their April Fools’ Day pranks to morning publications.

In the U.S., April Fools’ Day has long gone beyond personal pranks and become part of media culture. Large companies and media outlets regularly release fake news or products. For example, tech giants have for years published fictional features that looked so realistic that users believed them.

In Ukraine, April 1 is primarily associated with lighthearted jokes among friends and colleagues, but there are also larger-scale traditions. The most famous is the humor festival in Odesa, known as “Humorina.” On this day, the city turns into a huge carnival with costumes, performances, and parades, and the atmosphere feels more like a holiday than an ordinary day.

The Most Famous Pranks in History

April Fools’ Day has long gone beyond personal jokes and turned into an opportunity for large-scale pranks that have sometimes fooled millions of people. Some of them were so successful that they are still remembered as classic examples of April Fools’ humor.

One of the most famous incidents occurred in 1957, when the British broadcaster BBC aired a report on a “spaghetti harvest” in Switzerland. The report showed people supposedly picking pasta from trees. The segment looked so convincing that after it aired, viewers called the station asking how to grow their own “spaghetti tree.”

In 1996, the Taco Bell restaurant chain announced that it had purchased the Liberty Bell in the U.S. and renamed it the “Taco Liberty Bell.” The news sparked a wave of outrage until the company admitted it was a joke. This prank is considered one of the most successful marketing moves in history.

Tech companies also actively use April 1. Google’s annual pranks are particularly well-known; they sometimes look so realistic that users mistake them for real products. The company has even established a separate tradition of launching fictional services or features specifically on this day.

Another interesting feature of modern pranks is their rapid spread via the internet. Whereas in the past a prank was limited to television or newspapers, today it can go viral in a matter of minutes and reach a global audience. That is why on April 1, it is important to pay close attention to the news and verify information.

What Tourists Should Keep in Mind on April 1

Despite the lighthearted nature of April Fools’ Day, for tourists this day may not be as simple as it seems. With so many pranks and fake news stories, it’s easy to get confused or even find yourself in an unpleasant situation.

First and foremost, you should be cautious about news and promotions. On April 1, many companies, services, and even airlines publish fictional offers or “sensational” announcements that are actually jokes. If the information seems too attractive or unusual, it’s best to verify it on official sources.

You should also be careful with online bookings and purchases. On this day, fake websites or pseudo-discounts that mimic real services may appear. Tourists are advised to use only trusted platforms and avoid suspicious offers.

Another thing to keep in mind is local pranks. In some countries, people may play pranks not only on acquaintances but also on strangers, including tourists. This is usually harmless, but it can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, especially if you’re not familiar with local traditions.

At the same time, April Fools’ Day is a great opportunity to experience the country’s atmosphere from a different perspective. Many cities host festivals, street performances, or themed events that make your trip more vibrant and unforgettable.
