Canada has extended a special immigration program for Ukrainians—the Canada-Ukraine Emergency Travel Authorization (CUAET). As reported by Ukrinform, this was announced by Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Lena Matledge Diab.

The decision was made against the backdrop of the ongoing war and is aimed at supporting Ukrainians who have been forced to leave the country.

What does the extension of the CUAET program entail?

The CUAET program continues to allow Ukrainians to legally reside in Canada, work, and integrate into the country’s economy.

Importantly, this does not involve accepting new applications—the extension applies to Ukrainians who have already participated in the program.

According to the immigration minister, the decision to extend CUAET stems from the fact that the war in Ukraine is ongoing, and many citizens remain forcibly displaced.

Who is eligible for the extension?

Ukrainians who meet the following criteria may apply for an extension of their permit:

● arrived in Canada under the CUAET program by March 31, 2024;

● are already in the country at the time of application.

The application deadline is March 31, 2027.

If approved, Ukrainians will be able to obtain a new residence permit and work permit valid for up to three years.

How many Ukrainians have benefited from CUAET?

The CUAET program was launched in early March 2022. It has become one of the key tools for supporting Ukrainians abroad. Since its inception, over 298,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Canada. At the same time, the exact number of those still in the country is unknown, as Canada does not maintain official statistics on departures.

The extension of CUAET gives Ukrainians more time to stay legally and plan their future in the country. At the same time, in complex situations—such as when processing documents or changing status—it is important to act correctly from a legal standpoint. In such cases, it is advisable to consult specialists: through Visit Ukraine, immigration lawyers’ services are available to help Ukrainians abroad prepare documents and avoid mistakes.

We remind you! Canada is expanding opportunities for Ukrainian families already in the country by simplifying the rules for legal residence and access to work and education. New government decisions provide more time to adapt and await immigration decisions after emergency programs close. Read about who can take advantage of the updated conditions, which statuses can be extended, and until what date Ukrainians will be able to legally reside in Canada.
