Holy Week is the final, most solemn, and most spiritual period leading up to the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection. For believers, these six days are a time of deep empathy, as they are dedicated to remembering the final days of Jesus Christ’s earthly life, his suffering, crucifixion, and burial. During this period, physical fasting is closely intertwined with spiritual purification, requiring a special inner disposition from the individual.

What is Holy Week and what is its significance?

The word “passion” in Church Slavonic means “suffering.” The significance of this period lies in walking the Way of the Cross together with the Savior. This is a time when believers are called upon to leave behind the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse themselves in prayer and repentance. The importance of these six days lies in preparing the soul for the greatest miracle—the Resurrection. It is believed that without sincerely experiencing the sorrow of Holy Week, it is impossible to fully feel the joy of the coming Easter.

What do the days of Holy Week signify?

Each day of this period is called Great and is imbued with unique biblical significance. At the beginning of the week, believers recall Christ’s final conversations with his disciples, his parables, and his miracles. During these days, people traditionally begin preparing their homes for the holiday. The culmination of these preparations comes on Holy Thursday, which is commonly called Maundy Thursday. This day is associated with the Last Supper, spiritual purification through Communion, as well as the traditional start of baking Easter cakes and dyeing eggs.

The following day, Good Friday, is the saddest in the Christian calendar, as it is dedicated to the trial, crucifixion, and death of Jesus on the cross. Holy Saturday is a time of silence, when mourning gradually gives way to a reverent anticipation of the coming miracle and the descent of the Holy Fire.

What is strictly forbidden during Holy Week?

Since this is a period of the highest spiritual concentration, the strictest restrictions of the entire Great Lent are in effect. Any noisy entertainment, celebrations, visits to entertainment venues, dancing, and singing are strictly prohibited. The Church does not perform weddings or baptisms during these days.

Great attention is paid to one’s spiritual state: it is strictly forbidden to quarrel, harbor grudges, envy others, use foul language, or entertain evil thoughts. In terms of diet, believers observe the strictest asceticism, completely excluding meat, dairy products, and eggs, and on the most austere Good Friday, many abstain from food altogether until the Shroud is brought out during the evening service.

Is it permissible to clean, do laundry, and work during Holy Week?

Practical matters traditionally generate the most interest in the days leading up to the holiday. The Church does not forbid working if it is your primary occupation; however, household chores must be properly managed. It is customary to complete major cleaning, laundry, sewing, and minor repairs by the evening of Holy Thursday.

Starting on Good Friday, any heavy physical labor, handicrafts, gardening, and cleaning are considered highly undesirable. In the final days before Easter, all concerns should be set aside so that nothing distracts a person from prayer, attending church, and reflecting on the great sacrifice made for the salvation of humanity.
