Clean Thursday: What You Should Definitely Avoid Today and How to Spend the Day Properly
Preparing for Easter raises many questions: Is it necessary to make your home spotless, and how can you clear your mind? We’ve compiled the main church rules and folk traditions for this joyful holiday. Find out when it’s best to bathe, bake Easter cakes, and what is strictly forbidden today
Today, April 9, marks one of the most important days of Holy Week—Maundy Thursday. In Christian tradition, it is closely linked to the events of the Last Supper, when Jesus Christ instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist and, as a sign of profound humility, washed the feet of his disciples. That is why today has become the main symbol of comprehensive renewal, requiring us to pay attention both to the state of our homes and to the purity of our own thoughts.
When should you bathe on Maundy Thursday, and how should you do it correctly?
According to ancient folk customs, one should begin water rituals early in the morning, preferably before sunrise. It is believed that pre-dawn water possesses special healing power. By greeting the first rays of the sun already clean, a person symbolically washes away not only physical dirt and fatigue, but also the grievances, anxieties, and negativity accumulated over the year.
To enhance this effect, our ancestors used an interesting ritual: they placed a silver coin or spoon in the basin used for washing their faces. It was believed that washing with such “silver” water helps preserve beauty and protects against the evil eye. The most important thing during the morning bath is to tune into a positive mindset, sincerely believe that the water washes away all heaviness, and ask in prayer for inner peace and health.
Is it necessary to do a thorough cleaning on Maundy Thursday?
This is probably the most popular question on the eve of Easter. Many people have grown accustomed to viewing this day solely as an exhausting marathon with a rag and a mop, trying to scrub every inch of the house, sort through all the closets, and tackle a massive load of laundry.
Tidying up is a wonderful and proper tradition. By getting rid of dust and old, unnecessary things, we truly free up space and prepare our home for the Bright Resurrection. However, clergy constantly remind us: the main meaning of the holiday lies in the purification of the soul, not the windows. Spring cleaning should not become an end in itself and overshadow the spiritual significance of the day.
If, after washing the floors, you have no energy left for prayer, attending church, or meaningful fellowship with loved ones, then your priorities are misplaced. You can clean the house in advance, spreading the workload over the entire week, so that on Maundy Thursday itself you can devote your time to what matters most—spiritual purification and preparing your heart for the holiday. A messy corner in the house is not a sin, unlike malice in the soul.

What should you absolutely not do on Maundy Thursday?
Since the essence of the day lies in purification, the main prohibitions are related to the accumulation of “spiritual dirt.” Today, you should absolutely avoid getting into conflicts, arguing heatedly, or swearing. Any displays of envy, resentment, or greed negate the meaning of spiritual preparation. Refusing to help those in need on this day is also considered a bad deed.
In terms of daily life, it is not recommended to leave the house in a state of utter chaos or to leave tasks unfinished. But you shouldn’t go to extremes either: overworking yourself with heavy physical labor until late at night is a bad idea. It is better to devote the evening of this day to rest, quiet, and attending church services, rather than trying to finish what you no longer have the strength for.
When to bake Easter cakes and dye eggs: Holy Week traditions
Maundy Thursday is traditionally considered the best time to begin culinary preparations for Easter. It is on this day that it is customary to prepare the dough for Easter cakes and begin dyeing eggs. People have always approached this process with great reverence.
The main rule for successful holiday baking is silence in the kitchen and the hostess’s positive thoughts. It is believed that dough is sensitive to energy, so it does not tolerate commotion, arguments, or a bad mood. If you approach the task with a calm spirit and prayer, the baked goods will turn out fluffy, delicious, and stay fresh for a long time—a wonderful sign for the whole family for the coming year. Believers try to conclude this bright day at the evening church service, where the 12 Passion Gospels are read, after which they carefully carry a lit “Passion” candle home.
