With the arrival of spring, many Ukrainians feel the urge to break away from their usual routine and spend the weekend somewhere new—strolling through the streets of historic city centers, sitting outdoors on an open terrace, and catching the first blooms. Ukraine offers plenty of destinations for this kind of getaway, and choosing among them can sometimes be difficult. UNIAN.Tourism has compiled a selection of five locations worth considering for a short spring weekend.

We’ll tell you more about the routes from Zakarpattia to Cherkasy, their highlights, and practical tips in the article below.

Uzhhorod and the cherry blossom season

Every spring, the capital of Zakarpattia transforms into one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations thanks to the mass blooming of cherry blossoms. Pink trees cover the city streets usually in the second half of April, and it is during this period that Uzhhorod welcomes the most visitors. Spring arrives earlier in Transcarpathia than in central Ukraine, so warm weather and long, light evenings set in sooner here.

There are a few practical things to keep in mind when planning your trip. It’s best to book train tickets and accommodations in Uzhhorod for the cherry blossom season in advance—demand is traditionally high. The same goes for local restaurants: tables at popular spots fill up quickly, and the pace of service here is quite slow, so you might have to wait about an hour for a simple salad. Those with a flexible schedule should consider visiting during the workweek—there are significantly fewer tourists on those days.

Zhytomyr: An Underrated Destination

Zhytomyr remains one of the least obvious options for a spring weekend getaway, even though it takes about two hours to get there from Kyiv by minibus. The city boasts a rich historical architecture: an old water tower, a fire tower, numerous churches, and the Museum of Cosmonautics form the backbone of a walking route through the city center. It is in the spring that Zhytomyr truly comes into its own—it remains one of the greenest regional centers in the country.

A separate attraction is the banks of the Teteriv River with its well-maintained promenade and suspension bridge, offering picturesque views of the river. The city’s culinary scene has undergone a significant transformation in recent years: modern establishments with interesting menus have opened here. It’s worth booking a table in advance, as there may be no available seats on weekends.

Kamianets-Podilskyi: A Packed Itinerary in Podillia

Kamianets-Podilskyi in the Khmelnytskyi region remains one of those cities you’ll want to return to. Its historic center is well-maintained, and the tourist infrastructure has developed significantly in recent years: many new dining establishments have opened, particularly those catering to a younger crowd. Even for visitors who have been here before, there’s always something new to do.

The main highlights of the itinerary include the famous Kamianets-Podilskyi Fortress, ancient cathedrals, a stroll through historic courtyards, and the park overlooking the Dniester Canyon, where the sunset is particularly beautiful. On Saturday evenings, the city center can get quite crowded, so it’s advisable to book dinner reservations in advance.

Kaniv: A Day Trip to Shevchenko’s Sites

For those with only one day to spare, Kaniv in the Cherkasy region is a great option. The city is primarily known as the burial site of Taras Shevchenko: his grave and a themed museum are located on Tarasova (Chernecha) Hill. The bus ride from Kyiv takes about two hours, making Kaniv a convenient destination for a short getaway.

Chernecha Mountain offers some of the most spectacular views of the Dnipro River in this region. As May approaches, the slopes are covered with fresh greenery and wildflowers that the sun hasn’t yet had a chance to scorch. Visitors traveling by car should include a few additional stops along the Dnipro in their itinerary—the village of Vytachiv, the town of Rzhyshchiv, and the Trakhtemyriv Regional Landscape Park. Vytachiv deserves special attention as one of the most picturesque places in the Kyiv region.

“Oleksandriya” Arboretum in Bila Tserkva

The “Oleksandriya” Arboretum in Bila Tserkva is the perfect option for a day trip from the capital, as the drive here takes just over an hour. The park is among the largest and most famous arboretums in the country. In addition to rare flora and fauna, the grounds feature preserved architectural structures from the 18th and 19th centuries, which hold special value for visitors.

The best time to visit is the second half of April and May. During this time, the trees are covered in greenery, the meadows in wildflowers, and the flower beds in well-tended arrangements. A walk through the park during this season allows you to combine active outdoor recreation with exploring historical heritage. It’s worth noting that certain issues regarding amenities on the grounds remain unresolved, so it’s best to plan your visit without long breaks.
