In 2026, Holy Saturday is marked by strict restrictions in Jerusalem and special rules for the blessing of baskets in Ukraine. Find out when the Holy Fire will descend, what you can do today, and which prohibitions must not be broken
Holy Saturday, or Silent Saturday, is a time of profound peace, gentle sorrow, and reverent anticipation of the greatest Christian miracle. In 2026, this day falls on April 11. It is on Holy Saturday that the final preparations for the holiday are completed, and an event takes place in Jerusalem that the whole world watches with bated breath. Below are answers to the most common questions about the traditions, prohibitions, and peculiarities of this day in modern times.
What does Holy Saturday before Easter mean?
According to church tradition, this day symbolizes the time Jesus Christ’s body spent in the tomb. However, His soul at that time descended into hell, where it broke the chains of death and brought the souls of the righteous—including Adam and Eve—into the light. That is why Holy Saturday is considered the day of life’s victory over non-existence. During the church liturgies, a beautiful symbolic transition takes place: the clergy change their dark mourning vestments for light and festive ones. This is a sign that the time of mourning is coming to an end, giving way to the joy of the Resurrection.
What time will the Descent of the Holy Fire take place in 2026, and where can you watch it online?
The Descent of the Holy Fire at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is the culmination of Holy Saturday. Believers consider it a miraculous, non-man-made testimony to Christ’s Resurrection, and in the first moments after the flame appears, it has the amazing property of not burning the skin or hair.
The ceremony usually takes place between 10:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Kyiv time. You can watch this event live on major Ukrainian TV channels, on social media, and on the YouTube channels of major media outlets. After the ceremony, the relic is traditionally transported by special flights to various countries to distribute the fire among local communities.
Why has access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem been restricted?
In 2026, the Holy Fire ceremony is taking place amid unprecedented security measures. Due to heightened risks of rocket attacks and hostilities in the region, Israeli law enforcement officials, in consultation with religious leaders, have decided to cancel mass gatherings.
Only about 50 people will be allowed inside the Church itself—primarily members of the higher clergy and official delegations. Access to the Christian Quarter of the Old City will be strictly limited: checkpoints have been set up on the streets, and entry is permitted only with special digital passes. People’s safety is the top priority this year.

When should Easter baskets be blessed, and how do churches operate during wartime?
Holy Saturday is the traditional day when believers begin bringing Easter baskets to churches for blessing. However, under martial law in Ukraine, strict rules are in effect.
The Church and the authorities strongly urge citizens not to violate the curfew.
You should plan a trip to church for prayer and the blessing of Easter cakes during the day or evening on Saturday, or on Sunday morning, when movement restrictions will be lifted. For those who wish to participate in nighttime services, special online broadcasts will be organized, allowing you to celebrate the holiday safely at home.
What can you do on Holy Saturday?
This day is dedicated to inner silence and finishing household chores before Easter. Housewives can finish baking Easter cakes if they didn’t have time to do so on Maundy Thursday, and dye eggs—it is believed that eggs dyed on Saturday last the longest. Toward evening, it is customary to prepare an Easter basket, filling it with Easter cakes, eggs, meat, cheese, and salt. Holy Saturday is also considered a day of charity: believers try to help those in need, give alms, and engage in charitable acts. In the evening, many attend festive church services, trying to stay awake all night to greet the bright holiday spiritually prepared.
What is strictly forbidden on Holy Saturday before Easter?
Since Saturday is a day of spiritual peace, any commotion or noise is considered inappropriate. On this day, believers are instructed to refrain from heavy physical labor, field work, repairs, as well as major household chores such as laundry, cleaning, or washing windows (according to tradition, dirty water can symbolically “flood” the eyes of ancestors). Handicrafts should also be put aside.
Any loud festivities, dancing, birthday celebrations, or weddings are strictly forbidden. This is a time for inner reflection, so one must not quarrel, use foul language, take offense, or refuse forgiveness to those who ask for it. Additionally, taking the life of any living creature is considered a grave sin on this day, so hunting and fishing are strictly prohibited. The Church recommends that married couples refrain from intimate relations. It is also important to remember that strict fasting continues until Sunday morning (one must not eat cooked food or drink alcohol), and visiting cemeteries on Holy Saturday is not blessed.
Reminder! The days leading up to Easter hold deep biblical significance and require strict spiritual discipline. This is a time of sincere repentance, when it is important not only to finish daily chores but also to observe important church prohibitions. Find out what you should give up during these six days for the purification of the soul.
