Kolc Fortress in the Romanian Carpathians is a 14th-century medieval castle that served as the prototype for Jules Verne's "Carpathian Castle." Learn about the history of the fortress, its legends, a new tourist route, and how to get to one of the most mystical locations in Retezat
In the heart of the Romanian Carpathians, at the foot of the Retezat Mountains, a route has appeared that combines history, mysticism and modern tourist experience. We are talking about the Colc Fortress - a medieval ruin that stood abandoned on the rocks for centuries and managed to become overgrown with eerie legends.
Today, this place is experiencing a new life: a thematic trail inspired by the novel The Castle in the Carpathians leads here, and the fortress itself is increasingly appearing on lists of the most atmospheric locations in Europe.
The history of the legendary castle and how to get to it is told in this article.
Cocl Fortress in Romania: the history of a medieval castle in the Carpathians
The Colc Fortress was built in the 14th century by the noble Candeşti family (later known as Kendefi). The place chosen for construction is one that even today seems almost inaccessible: sheer cliffs over 100 meters high above the Rauschör valley, at the entrance to the Retezat mountain range.
The location was of strategic importance - the fortress controlled the path to the mountainous regions. At the same time, its isolation caused it to become an almost mythical object over time.
Today, only ruins remain of the castle, but even they make a strong impression: the stone walls literally merge with the rock, creating the illusion that the building is part of the mountain landscape.

Legends of the Kolz Fortress: Witchcraft, Ghosts and Secrets of the Monastery
The history of the Kolz Monastery, located opposite the fortress, is no less mysterious. It is here that fragments of ancient frescoes have been preserved, which have amazed travelers for centuries.
A feature of these paintings is the gouged out eyes of the saints. The reasons for this phenomenon remain unknown: some historians attribute it to Ottoman raids, others to religious conflicts. However, local residents have their own explanation.
Back in the 19th century, stories appeared in the press that the “eyes of saints” were used in magical rituals - they could influence people's behavior. These stories only strengthened the reputation of the area as a center of mysticism.

Why did the Kolts fortress become the prototype of Jules Verne's “Carpathian Castle”?
It is the Kolts fortress that is considered the prototype of the mysterious castle from the novel “Castle in the Carpathians”. In his book, Jules Verne described an abandoned fortress that seems to dissolve among the mountains and causes fear among local residents.
The writer conveyed an atmosphere of uncertainty and anxiety: the castle seems either real or ghostly, and its silhouette can easily be confused with rocky ridges. According to the plot, residents of the surrounding villages avoided this place, fearing the ghosts of its former owners. Interestingly, even today the fortress retains this effect - in foggy weather its contours almost disappear, creating the feeling that it exists only in the imagination.

Tourist route to Kolc Fortress: the first thematic trail in Romania
In recent years, they decided to return the location to the tourist map. This is how a thematic trail a little over a kilometer long appeared - the first in Romania, designed in a comic book format. The route combines several levels of experience at once:
- Illustrated panels retelling the plot of the novel by Jules Verne;
- Information stands about the nature and history of the region;
- QR codes with audio legends;
- Interactive elements for visitors.
The walk turns into not just a climb to the ruins, but a full-fledged story that can be “read” along the way.
How to get to Kolts Fortress: route, tips and safety
The starting point is the village of Râu de Mori - a small Carpathian settlement, which has been actively developing tourism in recent years.
The climb to the fortress takes only 20-30 minutes. The route passes through the forest, and the trail itself is well marked, so it is accessible even to unprepared travelers.
However, you should be careful near the fortress itself: steep cliffs, narrow passages and the lack of full restoration make the location potentially dangerous. In addition, you can meet vipers among the stones.

What to see near Kolts Fortress?
The Retezat region is not only a fortress. Nearby are several impressive natural and tourist attractions:
- Lake Góra Apelor - a large mountain reservoir with an area of over 400 hectares;
- A dam about 170 meters high - one of the highest in Europe;
- Rauszor mountain resort - popular in winter among skiers;
- Numerous routes to glacial lakes and peaks over 2000 meters.
For experienced tourists, more difficult tracks are open - in particular, climbing to the Retezat peak or to the Godeanu Mountains area.
Why is it worth visiting Kolc Fortress?
Despite its growing popularity, Kolc Fortress remains almost untouched. It has never been fully restored - only partially cleared of vegetation, opening the ruins to visitors.
It is this "wild" authenticity that attracts tourists. There is no mass tourism, souvenir shops or crowds here – just mountains, wind and the remains of walls that remember the Middle Ages. And perhaps that is why the “Carpathian Castle” still looks as if it hides more than it is ready to show.
Sometimes the best trip is right next door. Ukraine surprises even those who think they have seen it all.
